RockRaines
QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 18, 2017 -> 09:01 PM) Sometimes it is the basics that really get you. I was 12 or 13 over on the front while playing with a few of my varsity guys. We make the turn and I was contemplating excuses to get out of there. A double bogey on ten didn't help my mood. I hit a thin drive that somehow found the fairway on 11. As I was lining up to hit an 8 iron I was a little exasperated and lifted the club and dropped it back down with a little force. I look down and realized I was about three inches inside of where I was set up. I moved closer to the ball, pured my first iron of the day and shot even on the back. Two birdies and six pars to go with the double on 10. Somehow I moved my ball position three inches out. Simple check I should have made a couple hours earlier when I started mis***ting so many shots thin and to the right. It was a good lesson for the team. My game gets messed up by my grip and grip pressure as well as shoulder level. I'll start yanking or blocking depending on my issues. Sometimes you need a reset or have someone you play with tell you what they see.

In my last 8 rounds, I've had 7 sub 90 rounds including an 82 in my last which is my lowest ever. Previously in my life I had only shot sub 90 twice and I've played 20+ rounds a year the last three years since i started playing again. I really wish I hadn't quit for five years starting my senior year of high school. Golf is both the most rewarding, and frustrating sport. It sure is fun to be playing this well though. Jenksismyhero
QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 20, 2017 -> 07:21 AM) Seriously it is a challenge sometimes. The mom of one of my players drops f bombs after bad shots by her daughter. She asked how I manage not to. I laughed and told her it was tough. She told me to just whisper them. Her grandpa follows the Bob Knight tradition. We good coach - bad coach her all the time. lol I'm glad I can be the kumbaya singing coach. I took my 14 year old nephew out this weekend and boy do I have a bigger appreciation for coaches of young kids. Granted, you at least have kids who WANT to be good and probably have some experience, but this kid got SO down on himself when he couldn't hit a good shot. He's only played a few times, and golf is probably THE worst sport to start because of the insane pressure you feel (from your group and from players behind you), but it was still pretty crazy how upset he was that he wasn't hitting the ball like the pros. You don't really get that with other sports. Sure, you're not dunking like Lebron, but you can hit the shots that he takes. He would top the ball, hit it 3 yards, miss completely, etc. I kept telling him to take his time and to try to have fun with it, but it was pretty much torture for him. He sat out a couple of holes because of his frustration. I think by the end he was happy he went and wants to play more in the future, but it was a pretty negative experience for him I think overall, which is sad. I'm a ~10 handicap and would be better if I played more, but even if I shoot a 95 i'm still having a great time. I'm outside playing golf. What's not to like? It's the best sport ever. I didn't play until college and I wish I grew up playing. The honestly and frustration is tops of all sports. I can't get enough. Since I joined a club I play at least 60 rounds a year. I'm putting my son into it as soon as I can. I had a long slump last season and my index went to 16 but I'm hoping I get back to 11 by sept. Make a game of it. Golf is so mental. I took my nephew and had him hit water balloons. He loved it

Texsox
We practice every weekday day from August to May. 120 to 150 minutes. My thirty or so players range from one just shot a 68 in the city championship this week to girls trying to break 120. Some are mental basket-cases, including the guy who may be the key to us advancing to state this coming year. What I try to teach is embracing the process of improving. I talk about how there will be plateaus. My #3 started playing the summer before his freshman year and was breaking 100 by the end of the year. Then he was breaking 90 his sophomore year. That's about a 40 shot drop in two years. He only broke 80 once in a tournament this past year. It was a long frustrating at times year for him. Now that I am coaching my low single digit handicap will probably never happen again. It is really tough for me when I'm struggling to break 90. The worst is the lack of practice has me guessing at distances I hit clubs. Any shaping isn't going to happen. Recover shots are swings and hope. Forget about really reading greens. RockRaines
I could use you Tex. I've been playing well and all of a sudden my round today I was spraying everything right and at times shanking. No idea where this slice came from. I've been playing draws all summer. I couldn't hit anything solid.

Texsox
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 25, 2017 -> 09:19 AM) I swear, I play so much better when I haven't picked up a club in 6 months. It's when I'm playing frequently that all the stupid s*** happens. I always played a great round in March when I was living in Chicago. I wasn't overswinging. I would be in balance, making solid contact, and not putting too much pressure on shooting a low round.
Texsox
One of my players verbally committed to a college today. I'm really happy for her. We're avoiding the distractions during the school year. She decided early on D3 so she could play right away and travel. She didn't want to be stuck on campus for a couple years at a D1 school. Plus she was offered 100%, most D1 were going to be partial. Yeah, when I've been hitting it good for awhile I then run into lazy habits like last week when I was pulling the club through the zone wide open. Hoping I can get my pro to straighten me out this week.
