Wow. As weird as it is to say, I hadn't noticed he had gotten his average up to .183. Now to see if this taking walks stuff is real. I'm 90% sure I remember him saying that was something he worked on in the offseason/spring.

BB% up from 6.5 in 2015 to 9.6 last year and 13.9 this year.

Bums me out that this org saw fit to give Covey a shot at a 5th starter spot a year after it decided Junior Guerra hadn't earned one

While I don't disagree, we also weren't rebuilding when Guerra was around.

He's got to be one of the most mediocre starters the Sox have had in a while. Oh well, just needs to give innings while Rodon gets his arm amputated

At least 2 of his 4 starts so far he has given us a chance to win. Tonight is getting away from us, but that was also a bad bounce to push the lead up. He has been playing with fire, but we aren't expecting him to even be average, either.

I'd give him back to the Athletics, try Swarzak for a couple of starts and promote Cory Luebke.

Sounds like a good plan

I'm hesitant to f*** with Swarzak at all. He looks like a competent reliever, I'd rather not screw with one of the things that is working.

I know, I just had to shoehorn that in somewhere. While we're on the subject of shoehorned White Sox dumbass pitching decisions, Chris Devenski, who we gave up for Brett f***ing Myers, has been *incredible* this season. 17.28 K/9 v 1.08 BB/9 in 16.2 IP.

No way you mess with Swarzak right now. His velocity increase coincides with his switch to the bullpen. Plus what is the upside in converting him anyways?

He's been a starter most of his career though. Not like it's something he's not comfortable with. And you'd know very quickly if it was something you wanted to continue (velocity would be a big indicator).

Yeah, I haven't lost any sleep over that one. Sometimes s*** happens. Not gonna get em all right.

Lol...yeah that one didn't work out for us. It's crazy how dominant Devenski has been with the Astros.

It actually doesn't. He moved to the bullpen in 2012 and the velo started ticking up in 2015. The upside is obvious, he's worth more to the Sox as a competent 5th starter than a 6th inning guy.

I'm not understanding the "We need to get rid of Covey right now" group.

If no one is ready in AA or AAA (which is a whole different issue itself) then what are you even asking for at that point? A change just to make a change?

I think he's gone when shields returns

My thinking as well, and it's worth the risk IMO. He's never going to have trade value as a reliever

I understand where you're coming from but it's also been six years since he's really been a starter in any serious fashion. Again, it's personal preference but I'd prefer not to screw with something that is working for now.

I get it, I just don't see how even trying him for a spot start f***s with him so much that he's not the same guy if he goes back to the pen

Yeah, no reason to get rid of him until you have to. His purpose is to eat innings until his spot is needed for someone with long-term potential. Until then let him contribute to the rebuild by losing once a week.

It's also a chance to evaluate him as well. When Shields comes back, maybe we leave Pelfrey in the rotation and see how Dylan's stuff would work in the pen. But there's really no harm in seeing what we can get out of him and seeing if he is worth keeping.

The funny thing is we're ONLY going to be 1/2 game out of first place even if we lose tonight.

At least the first month has been entertaining, and the trade deadline talk will make the middle of the season worth paying attention to, then there's the minor leaguers progressing and eventually impacting the big league team.

Things could be a lot worse.

I prefer the rebuilds that try various intriguing players as starters rather than just toss out random mediocre minor-leaguers to deliberately lose. Nobody's saying to promote Giolito or Lopez, just to try things out. There were also more intriguing Rule 5 options imo.
