White Sox Option Jacob May, recall Willy Garcia

Almost has to be Garcia. Need a CF, and he's been playing some games there for this reason. The only true CF in Charlotte is Adam Engel, who opened the season ice cold and doesn't seem ready (though he has heated up in the last week or so). I don't think they'll do that to Engel.

 

There is a small chance it could be Jason Bourgeois, who has also played some CF, but he's not on the 40-man so I really doubt it.

 

This is how I see it.

Not convinced they'll chose Covey over Pelfrey when Shields comes back.

Yeah the fact he is a rule 5 pick should have no bearing. I could see him staying on as a long-reliever though. They can cut someone like Asche and go with a 3-man bench.

I think it should. If they see enough stuff with him and think he could contribute in the pen the next few years, there's no reason not to keep him on the roster for this rebuilding year.

I would be very surprised if the White Sox send him back. Just based on their history with Rule 5 picks, they rarely make them, so when they do, they will want to keep them. Over the past 20 years, they've selected Adrian Nieto, Angel Sanchez, Jason Grilli, Tyrone Pendergrass, and Joe Davenport. Both Pendergrass and Davenport were sent back (I assume), but those occurred in '98 and '97 respectively. Sanchez was the only one they offered back of the previous 3, and the Angels actually refused him, so he remained with the Sox.

 

Really, what is the point in losing a guy who can eat innings for a rebuilding club?

He's averaging 5 innings per start so he's not exactly eating innings. At this pace he'll need 30 starts just to crack 150 IP.

 

I'm with Feeky on this one I don't know why they took him in the Rule 5 as he has little upside for Cooper to work with. The clay just isn't there. Maybe you move him to the pen he gains a couple ticks of velocity but he's still got mediocre off speed offerings and is still right handed. Personally as soon as one of Fulmer/Lopez/Rodon/Shields is back or MLB ready I'd just offer him back and if they don't want him put him in the pen and send Beck down.

I wanted Jake Cave in the Rule 5 draft but it looks like he's only played 3 games this year. Does anyone know if he was hurt?

It does as far as it is a free audition. If it is someone you think that could help you down the road, you eat his crap starts this season in a year that doesn't matter if he sucks or not if you think he can help in 2018/19/20 etc.

Yeah I get that but there may not even be room for him to stay up in the majors. If they really like him, they could always trade for him. Send over cash or PTBNL or something. Like I said, I think he will stay up as a long-reliever with a 3-man bench.

The first guy to go will be Pelfrey for sure. But the Sox will make room for the guy unless they don't see anything from him, which is always possible.

Exactly. The reason guys are even available in the rule 5 is because they need more minor league work. To think Covey could be league average this year would be crazy talk. If that were remotely probable, Oakland would have been foolish to expose him. As you said, he was drafted with 2018, or even later in mind.

I'm actually intrigued to see Covey in the bullpen. I don't think he has what it takes to cut it as a starter in the majors but something might be there as a reliever.
