The shine hasn't wore off considering he's 18 and playing in the same league as Collins. Tatis' numbers are just a short fall off from last year but that's to be expected when playing against a higher level of competition than he did in '16. Still don't get what the Sox FO was thinking when they traded for Shields last year.

C'mon, Josh. This was such an obvious waste of financial resources when the trade came down. We were doing the Padres a Huge favor by taking whatshisname off their hands.

 

Granted, Tatis, Jr. had not yet played in the states, but Sox scouted him, paid him a bunch of money, and before we knew it, he is a legitimate prospect. And granted, the name Luis Robert was not yet on our lips, but there was a lot of talk about signing international talent.

 

There were members here who criticized the trade immediately, not necessarily because of the Tatis inclusion, but because of the other half of the trade.

Padres are still playing more money. You can look at it as: Padres gave up a ton of money and a draft pick (when they signed Shields) to acquire Tatis.

So $25 million is nothing if Tim Anderson sucks. $50 million is nothing if the Sox spend that to sign Luis Robert and he doesn't pan out, but $25 million for Shields is a franchise changer.

 

As far as I am concerned, Tatis is a suspect until proven otherwise. For a fanbase that complains, rightfully so, about an organizations inability to produce hitters, we sure do whine a lot about the guys "who got away". Everytime they trade a position minor leaguer, he is a guaranteed stud. Yet reality shows, they are just as bad with other teams.

 

If Tatis is good as Keith Law said he is, correction, as good scout told Keith Law who has admitted he had never seen Tatis play, then the trade will be really bad. Why don't we wait to see how that turns out? It started with Chris Carter on this board. Someone actually complained in 2008 when Quentin was in the mist of a possible MVP, how trading Carter for him would come back to haunt the White Sox. Then Brandon Allen was a guaranteed future all star. Semien, Ravelo, Thompson, all stars.

 

They are all high k low OBP guys most below average in the field. No big loss on anyone yet. Eventually someone will hurt, but I wouldn't hold my breath it is Tatis.

 

He is hitting .250 with a .712 OPS in A ball and a 31.33% k rate. Yes, he's 18, and young for the level, but if he truly is a top 50 prospect, IMO, more should be expected. To me, one of the first red flags for guys deemed top prospects is the excuse young for the level.

 

It was the excuse for Courtney Hawkins several years ago. Obviously, Tatis is doing a bit better, but Hawkins won't ever come close to the major leagues, and probably won't make, at least doesn't deserve to make AAA. The really good ones find a way.

The trade was terrible regardless. It was the natural end result of a team thinking that tinkering around the margins would eventually pay off.

 

But Tatis will be whatever he is. And I am encouraged that our LatAm dept could have finally paid off.

Exactly. Just about everyone except for the Sox FO knew Shields moving from an NL pitchers park to the south side launching pad was a bad idea.

Did either of those guys *ever* appear on a top 100 list? Even at a fringe site? I know people were excited about Thompson after his debut in '15 but very few people on here were upset with the Todd Frazier trade.

A LOT of people were mad about Thompson being traded.

Yes, the Sox gave a solid prospect when Shields was pitching horribly, so if he turns around and pitches decently, the may recoup some of it.
