Bill Maher does something very stupid

I'm like Oprah I don't even like to write N-word much less write the full word. It's ugly and awful word.

Yet there is an incident worth discussing IMO involving the word. Comic Bill Maher on Friday night has a Nebraska senator on his Real Time show and Bill uttered the N-word during a lighthearted give and take with the senator. The audience groaned and laughed a little and Maher said, "It's a joke." The senator blew an opportunity by not saying a word after Maher uttered the word. Not blaming the senator but he shoulda been ready for anything being on the Bill Maher show.

Maher can't laugh this off. HBO today or last night issued a statement condemning Maher's uttering the word and said it would be edited out of the broadcast or bleeped out of the broadcast when it airs again.

My question to you is ... How could Maher be so stupid? He said the N-word as punch line to a very bad joke about working in the fields ("I'm not a house xxxxx") And also my question is ... should HBO suspend the show or fire him?? Some HBO executive did say Maher's actions were awful and the word would be edited out of the show for future airings.

My guess is he could still be fired depending on his response to the HBO statement on the matter.

Kathy Griffin's 15 minute news cycle has about run out on her story as Bill Maher grabs the baton on the "aging comedians relay race" Who will be the next to grab the baton and do something utterly stupid for the third leg of the comic's relay?

This is ridiculous.

Maher says insensitive nonsense like this every week.

Simply because he uses a particular word shouldn't set people off. It strikes me as faux outrage and disingenuous that because he said a certain word that should implicate the audience in something they weren't already implicated in by the same exact substance simply without the N word explicitly used.

It's a big deal. He just apologized and the network statement prior to that was forceful. The Black Lives Matter leader called for his firing.

He's on HBO. He ain't getting fired for calling himself that.

It was stupid to say something so ignorant in such a loose manner but anyone who says Maher is racist knows nothing about his track record of support.

It's hilarious that people on the right label him as a liberal after this when he has no affiliation to either side outside of donating to Obama in 2012, which he has said on the show he kind of regrets because he wanted Obama to legalize weed nation wide.

Maybe someday you will hold politicians to the same standards you hold comedians.

Here's some things your boy Rush has had to say over the years. I bet you tune in on Monday without hesitation. And when you do and he calls for Mahers head, just remember who is talking.

I guess you don't believe me and think I'm a liar when I described my Rush listening habits consisted of occasionally listening to a 3 minute segment prior to one of his liar commercials in which he pretends to use the product. To summize: When driving (I don't listen to radio on internet ever), I switch from 610 radio to 810 radio sports talk to classic vinyl on sirius over to 980 radio and rush. If Rush is not in a commercial I'll listen for a segment, change when it hits a commercial and maybe get one more segment. If it's really good stuff, I may delay going in the lunch meeting place for one more 3 minute segment. I enjoy his defense of Trump and rips of the media and can't believe these radio hosts pretend to use these products during the fake commercials.

I'm a little surprised people are backing Maher. If Hannity had said this, people would DEMAND his firing. He said the N word on his show for gosh sakes. Also the Kathy Griffin thing. The Washington Post says to forget about it? Cmon. If somebody did this to Obama or Hillary, hold their fake severed heads? That person might have to move to Canada. For sure that person would not work again.

Ted Nugent

We need to ride in the battlefield and chop their heads off. If Obama is re-elected I will either be dead or be in jail in a year.

He also called for Hillary's hanging.

He was Trumps guest at the White House.

The Secret Service should have investigated Nugent then, just as they are interviewing Griffin. If he said he would kill Obama and Hillary he needed to be interviewed.

Maybe if you don't want to be associated with Rush, you should stop parroting what he says and acting like he is a good source for factual information(lots of people listen, folks!)

The guy is a talentless hack. They could replace him with a 1000 better comedians who would do a better job....without the bigotry, sexism, and occasional racist remark.

You guys with closed minds are something else. I like to listen to all points of view. So Maher is OK and Rush isn't?

I think pretty much no one in this thread likes Maher. He isn't good, but he isn't as bad as Rush.

Granted, Rush personally gone after people I care about so f*** that guy.

Should Rush have been fired for doing this:

At least with Maher it was a one time thing and it was a weak attempt at humor when they just got done discussing how Nebraska hates Democrats and the guy wanted him to visit and work in the fields.

Pot meet kettle. Tell me where I said Maher was ok saying what he said

I'll wait

And while you are looking, let me know the last time Rush apologized for anything he said.

I watch Maher weekly and enjoy his show even if I don't agree with his methods sometimes.

He's well read and informed and has opinions based on those things. He's also unbiased and references respectable facts. He doesn't just yell in a microphone hoping people take him seriously because of his volume.

Rush and Maher aren't even close to being the same.

Nugent clarified his remarks about Obama this week. CNN link or somewhere. He said he wasn't gonna kill anybody.

A lot of people do listen. The guy is mega wealthy and mega popular. Why is he discounted immediately?

Rush is smarter than saying something that will get him fired. Oops, Monday Night Football canned his ass. As far as sponsors dropping him, I don't know how he's even on the air with the bizarre ads that appear on that show. If's all products designed to rip off aging white men and ridiculous scam type products.

Didn't Rush get sick in Hawaii years ago, then went on the air to say nothing is wrong with the health care in this country because of his experience, not realizing that Hawaii has some sort of universal health care system?

If he is going to be on the radio, he should know what he is talking about. That is why people not on the right don't like him.

When is the last time you've listened to Limbaugh? I've never heard him raise his voice on his show, albeit a small sample size. He just talks merrily for 3 minutes before 10 minutes of commercials. How anybody can listen to any of those shows for more than one segement or two is beyond me. The commercials will wreck anybody's brain.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 10, 2017 -> 12:09 PM)
Maher took his lumps last night from Ice Cube and Michael Dyson.

Maher is a genius. To bring on some guests to discuss what he did and discuss the word was perfect (in terms of his saving his career). Unlike poor Kathy, Maher has EASILY survived this now, partly because of last night's show. Good job by Maher. Perfect job of crisis management by Maher and his staff. It's genius to bring on some guests to hammer him yet also says it's a learning tool. Bill Maher has proven he's a very very smart man. His career continues. Kathy's as of "now" is over. She still has a very slight chance of saving it, but not a great one. Remember Kramer on Seinfeld? He's never come back from his gaffe. Griffin actually ought to beg Maher to put her on his show. A show like last night's where she takes her lumps yet acts professional "could" conceivably save her stand up career. She has to get to the point the casino showrooms will take her back for standup.
