John Paxson basically confirmed on 670 this morning that they won't be free agent players this offseason. They are taking their time with this rebuild.

To be honest, I think Paxson knows that there is zero upside in him saying they are going to go aggressive at 2018. I think he recognizes there could be some things that open up, but the smartest thing for him and Gar to do is keep fans patient and delay expectations. If everyone thinks we are all in on 2018 and fail, there is a different perception than, we are going to be passive in 2018 and continue to collect young assets and focus on 2019. I am very pleased with how the rebuild is going thus far. That said, lots of risk remains.

I didn't realize until just now that Asik has a 2019/2020 player option that he's likely to pick up.

Only $4 million guaranteed in 2019/2020. They'll have to pay him next year. Not the year after though.

Per Woj:

Source: Full protections on New Orleans' 2018 first-round pick to Chicago in Mirotic deal: 2018: top 5; 2019: top 8; 2020: top 10; 2021: top 9. If somehow it still isn't conveyed to Bulls in 2021, it becomes a second-round pick in each of 2022 and 2023.

This is pretty typical but as a fan I get so frustrated by NBA protections.

In other sports, it seems like protections would go down as time goes on. You get player now, but if they don't work out like expected you can keep pick, but eventually I get the pick.

In the NBA it's like I get to keep pick if we lose too much, but also next year if we lose slightly less, but also the year after that if we lose the same amount, and if we never fit in that window...well deals off. Oh I mean I will have gotten the value from you, but sorry, you get nothing.

Or at the very least I would just demand "if pick is still in top 10 by 2020, then Chicago has right to swap picks, if no swap, THEN 2 second rounders"

Just stupid imo.

Even then, 2 second rounders is not as good as any first

A great read on how the nba could see the same downward pressures the MLB is seeing now very soon.

And this could mean very good things for bulls if they got their core right, though have to say I'm starting to gulp at giving lavine a max.

Lavine is getting 15-20 and the 20 is at best. Not enough money on the open market to drive up a contract bigger than that, imo. I think it will likely be somewhere in between but I could see it as low as $15. He’s going to be an RFA and Bulls are going to let him find a market. Only team I could see make a crazy bid is the Lakers and I doubt they will (cause they ultimately know Lavine is staying with the Bulls).

I think we may be a few years away from GM's and cap specialists making adjustments to newfound spending freedom teams have. Basically every all star, potential all star, or even borderline all star are looking for max or near max deals. To me a guy like Lavine does not do enough to get a even a near max deal. When I think of a max deal player, I think they have to be able to impact the game in more than one way, or if you're a one dimensional player, you gotta be ELITE at your skillset. We all know what Lavine is capable of pre-injury, and he has not had the opportunity to take his game to the next level yet, and there are doubts that he could actually do that, especially after coming back from a torn ACL.

Gar has been credited as a strong contract negotiator. Let's hope he can come up with a deal to keep Lavine happy and also find a middle ground between what he is now and what he could become.

Now this is how you do it.

Lauri Markkanen's flight to Sacramento got canceled due to weather in Chicago. Rather than have him fly 4 hours and play on same day after being home for birth of his kid, he will re-join Bulls in Chicago. So no Markkanen vs. Kings.

Kings are so bad the Bulls could put Payne, Felicio, Zipser, Blankley and Arcidiacono out there and still win.

Too bad too considering Magic won which would severely help the Bulls if they lose tonight. (At least Pelicans lost and Denver won so that helps their other pick)

EDIT: Lopez trying to single handedly help us though.

Just shows they need to trade him ASAP.

A higher pick is way more important than his veteran leadership right now (and I really like Robin)

There is an incredibly weak market for people like Robin Lopez, even though he is good.
