Anything they traded two months of Samardzija for would have had to be appreciably better than the value of the #26 overall pick (and larger bonus pool) that they used on Zack Burdi.

Regardless of who they picked, they knew that Samardzija would get them a compensation draft pick at the end of the first round (under the old rules)

Sox were. Burdi was sold to Sox fans as a potential guy who could assist a mlb playoff bullpen by August or September of 2016.

 

I can't really blame the Sox for not wanting to deal Shark at the deadline in 2015. They had just traded to bring in Frazier and wanted to go for it, however ill advised.

 

The mentality really changed by the end of 2016, which led to them dealing Sale/Eaton and now likely Robertson/Quintana/etc to rebuild.

My bad, you are correct.

 

I think it took a crappy 2016 for Hahn to convince KW and Jerry that rebuilding was in the Sox best interest. Cleveland is the class of the division right now and the Sox are not built to compete with the current roster.

I admittedly was very against Aaron Judge being a big part of a potential Q/Sale trade package because I was scared about him making enough contact vs. mlb pitching...I was very wrong.

I'd say they knew in July - just a few weeks after the Shields trade and the Burdi pick.

There were heavy trade rumors, especially Quintana as I recall, in July last year.

I don't know if the Yankees would have traded him for Sale. I don't know if he was traded if he would be doing what he is doing, but if he was, my God, how excited would we all be about him?

The majority of all these hypothetical trade proposals and prospect evaluations done on here for the past few months will all be off from who actually turns out to be great in the future. Thats why, no matter what the trade is for Q I am just going to try to be patient and see what the guys develop into. As long as Hahn and his scouts like the players is what matters.

Judge is a great story, but at some point he's gonna cool off. I kind of doubt he suddenly turned into one of the more prolific power hitters on this side of the steroid era.
