There is a rental from the past couple seasons who had value. The White Sox had a great offer. KW said no to moving him. He wanted to try and compete.

I remember this. Hahn wanted to deal Samardzija and KW wanted to go for it.

Damn, any idea on what the offer was? Even in general terms instead of specific names?

This is upsetting and insightful - hopefully Kenny's no longer in such a stance

Perhaps :P. Unfortunately that's all I can say.

It likely was a tough discussion between dealing Samardiza and going for it, knowing that the Sox could gain a late first round draft pick if he left in free agency.

Anything they traded two months of Samardzija for would have had to be appreciably better than the value of the #26 overall pick (and larger bonus pool) that they used on Zack Burdi.

Legit punch to gut.

Guarantee it had nothing to do with that and everything to do with that sudden 10 game or so win streak that got us to .500.

If they knew they were going to be rebuilding, I think it's certain they wouldn't have picked Burdi.

Regardless of who they picked, they knew that Samardzija would get them a compensation draft pick at the end of the first round (under the old rules)

Any deadline deal would have to bring back more value than the #26 overall draft pick + additional bonus pool money would.

I believe Sox were over .500 on draft day last year.

Sox were. Burdi was sold to Sox fans as a potential guy who could assist a mlb playoff bullpen by August or September of 2016.

I can't really blame the Sox for not wanting to deal Shark at the deadline in 2015. They had just traded to bring in Frazier and wanted to go for it, however ill advised.

The mentality really changed by the end of 2016, which led to them dealing Sale/Eaton and now likely Robertson/Quintana/etc to rebuild.

We traded for Frazier after the 2015 season, when Samardzija was gone

My bad, you are correct.

I think it took a crappy 2016 for Hahn to convince KW and Jerry that rebuilding was in the Sox best interest. Cleveland is the class of the division right now and the Sox are not built to compete with the current roster.

Not disagreeing but it's also possible they were offered something good but KW gonna KW.

Hindsight is always 20/20

I admittedly was very against Aaron Judge being a big part of a potential Q/Sale trade package because I was scared about him making enough contact vs. mlb pitching...I was very wrong.

I'd say they knew in July - just a few weeks after the Shields trade and the Burdi pick.

There were heavy trade rumors, especially Quintana as I recall, in July last year.

There was a couple pages of Aaron Judge shaming. Why would the White Sox want him? The picture image of a bust.

I don't know if the Yankees would have traded him for Sale. I don't know if he was traded if he would be doing what he is doing, but if he was, my God, how excited would we all be about him?

The majority of all these hypothetical trade proposals and prospect evaluations done on here for the past few months will all be off from who actually turns out to be great in the future. Thats why, no matter what the trade is for Q I am just going to try to be patient and see what the guys develop into. As long as Hahn and his scouts like the players is what matters.

Count me in the "Judge will not hit MLB pitching" club as well. But I am glad to see the kid doing well - he's very easy to root for.

My own opinion, but I would bet the Yankees would have dealt him for Sale or Q in the offseason. I'd assume Sox were asking about Sanchez, Torres, Frazier and Cashman wanted to start further down his prospect list like Mateo or Judge. He rhad a rough go at it last year, and the Yankees were really considering starting him in the minors this season but injuries forced him on the ML roster to start the year. So they didn't seem to be sold on him either.

Oh well...

Judge is a great story, but at some point he's gonna cool off. I kind of doubt he suddenly turned into one of the more prolific power hitters on this side of the steroid era.
