If the Marlins are selling, should we be buying?

Rumors are swirling of the Marlins ownership selling off the likes of Stanton and Yelich, 2 controllable young OF's with a proven track record. If we could put together a package without including any of Moncada, Robert, Eloy, Cease, Kopesch, or Hansen would you? The Phillies are rumored to be suitors and their farm system is nothing impressive in my opinion.

I've been 100% on board with a full rebuild for years, but if we can get a long term bat like Yelich to speed the process up I'd be all for it.

You're not getting Stanton without giving up one of Moncada, Robert or Eloy unless teams are really balking at the money. And if they are I don't know if I would as Stanton is 27 and fragile. I'd be extremely tempted to.

I would not be against it, especially because it seems like no teams are going to be offering good prospects. Like if we could get away with giving up a few of the guys we having bouncing between the majors and AAA and get him I think it would be a good deal. We keep talking about how we're going to have so much open payroll that we can get a good free agent, but how many guys actually want to come to the Sox? Its not like shopping in a store to get a player. If I remember correctly there were reports of several free agents this year taking less money to play where they want, and if its us against the Yankees or Dodgers or Cubs, who do you think they are gonna go to? So why not use that money and some of the less important prospects to get a 4-5 WAR/yr player who has a big contract now, but might be more towards market rate in only a few years.

Heh, I do appreciate a 295 million dollar guaranteed commitment being described as "controllable". Any player is controllable if you're willing to guarantee enough money.

That's why I specifically summed it up by mentioning Yelich and not Stanton. Yelich is something like 5/55M after this season.

What do to with the current pre-arb players (Davidson, Leury, Yolmer, Engel, e.g.) who, hopefully keep improving, will be an interesting part of the next phase of the rebuilding. Will they be part of the plan, traded, etc.?

They should be run out there for the next season and a half and see what they are. Leave the kids in the minors and tank hard through 2018.

Yes, this is just what I was thinking...Sox are in a full rebuild, still in the early stages, loading up on high end prospects, so naturally we should "buy".

I think the Sox should think about trading for Carlos Quintana, a nice controllable arm with a proven track record.
