KnightsOnMintSt
So there is always the discussion on if the White Sox could sign Harper or Machado, but what about a trade for Stanton? The reason I think this would be interesting is because the White Sox probably wouldn't have to give up as many prospects as usual, solely because of the amount of money they would have to take on. Something like: White Sox get: Giancarlo Stanton. Marlins get: Eloy Jimenez, Zack Collins, Dane Dunning, Alec Hansen, and Spencer Adams. Anyway, I wouldn't mind trading for him, but he's "Fairly paid", so I want to give up virtually none of my high end talent for him and that's the problem. The Marlins would want a Jiminez type back for him and NO - those guys are my precious.

TomPickle
You know what worked out really great for the White Sox the past few seasons? Having a few really good players, no depth, and no prospects. So let's go ahead and instead have just one really good player, no depth, and trade away all of our prospects!
Rowand44
That's an absurd prospect package dude.
username
Don't mind the idea since we could take on payroll. But zero chance I give up anything significant for him. Stanton is making so much money that you could basically take his contract on for free or an extremely minimal return. There's no surplus value in that contract. And he's good, but he's not THAT good. $25 million a year on average for a guy pacing 3-4 WAR. And will decline throughout the life of it. In terms of my specific proposal. None of the guys I proposed, minus Adams, are proven above High-A. Plus with this deal, we still keep Moncada, Kopech, Lopez, Robert, Burger, and Giolito. I wouldn't be upset if it didn't happen, but if we did, I'd be excited.
ChiSox59
Lol, I don't know if I would give up 2 of those guys. We just spent the last 8 months acquiring talent, and now you want to ship it out for an overpaid Stanton? Ain't gonna happen.
KnightsOnMintSt
I actually thought my proposal was light. Obviously Jimenez is the prize, but I don't even think in that trade that there is a second headliner. Some good potential. But Dunning and Adams are bullpen guys to me. Collins cant hit above .220. To me Hansen would be the second headliner but there are some serious concerns. I think he'll be really good for the White Sox, but we all know about his command in college. GenericUserName
I'm all for trading for Stanton, but only because he's probably going to be traded for absolutely zero top prospects. From every report so far, no team is willing to give up anything of value for him. Hell, the Phillies basically asked for Yelich in order to take on the contract! Again, I like Stanton and I'm not against adding his salary because I'm not confident we are going to get a Harper or Machado, but not if we have to give up basically any of the high end talent we acquired. I would rather have the depth of potentially good talent over one guy.

Adams is a very safe bet to be a backend starter. Jimenez is one of very best prospects in baseball. Collins is one of the better catching prospects in the league and has a .950 OPS in July. Hansen and Dunning are like top 150 prospects in the game. This is way, way too much and the White Sox would likely never consider anything like this. TomPickle
I would do Avi for Stanton. Probably throw in a couple low level guys too if they wanted a bigger return.

KnightsOnMintSt
No trolling. I think that some seem to be severely undervaluing Stanton, and very much overvaluing A ball prospects. We must remember that not all these prospects will work out. Some of these guys are struggling in there respective leagues on the farm. I feel like this would be very fair considering the caliber of Stanton. Plus you would still have an OF of Robert, Stanton and Rutherford. Pitching staff of Rodon, Kopech, Lopez, Giolio and Cease. Infield of Burger, Anderson, Moncada and Abreu.
bmags
Not undervaluing Stanton. You are proposing a fair trade if Stanton was paid little. He's paid a gigantic amount and is injury prone. You are not valuing his contract at all.

TomPickle
I can't believe I'm as suckered into this thread as I am, but oh well. I do not hate this idea if he can be brought in for a minimal return. 2017: 14.5 MM - Basically takes the place of Frazier's deal for the rest of the year, shouldn't impact much of anything 2018: 25 MM - Hopefully the only truly sunk cost year as the White Sox will be terrible, but the rest of the salaries on the team shouldn't make this unpalatable 2019-20: 26 MM - White Sox should start to compete and might even be good during this time (He could also opt out after 2020! He won't) 2021-22: 29 MM - Still looking okay here, he'll be 31-32 during these years and if all goes well with the rebuild the White Sox should be competing for a World Series 2023-25: 32 MM - Starting to get ugly, undoubtedly he'll be on the decline and that is a lot of money to eat for what I'm sure will be a DH for a giant 33-35 year old human 2026: 29 MM - Bad money to a 36 year old 2027: 25MM - The end of the road! Only after a 10 MM buyout for 2028 that is There's probably about 130-160 million dollars worth of bad contract there, but the first five years might be worth it. OmarComing25
Stanton has basically no value due to his contract, if we were to take it all on I'd send very little back in return.

My initial reaction to your trade proposal was "Wtf, is this guy for real...must be trolling." After seeing this response, I believe that you are being serious and your idea makes sense; however, it's the type of trade that a team near contention makes. Another caveat, a team that is close to championship caliber would still not give up 6 legitimate prospects including an elite top 5 guy. It would be something more like Eloy, Adams and filler or Hansen, Collins, Luis Martinez + Tito polo
GreenSox
Stanton is not a super star. But he is kind of a Kenny Williams player, so something like this wouldn't surprise me. But it's the same old story. The team has a dozen holes, but lets's load up the wagon and bring in the "star" The Sox still wouldn't have made the playoffs even if Frazier was the type of player so many thought he was. Lessons never, ever leaned. Heck, we just had a superstar - one a lot better than Stanton - and we traded him. Robert hasn't even reached rookie ball yet and Rutherford is 20. By reducing the depth of the farm you reduce the importance of having that depth which is a hedge against prospect failures. Stanton's probably playing 1st base in 5 years. You are better off saying you're trolling than saying you can accurately assess or minimize the value of prospects we just traded for while at the same time taking on a massive contract. Miami would jump at that offer so fast it would make your head spin.
