Bob Sacamano
Lol basically what everyone figured. The whole "Reinsdorf won't trade with the Cubs" ended up being very close. Edited July 26, 2017 by soxfan2014
flavum
Not surprised. If the Cubs didn't win last year, there's no way Q is on the Cubs now.

From a fan's perspective and/or GM's perspective, this is unthinkable. From an owner's perspective it might not be as black and white. The Cubs were not likely our preference of where to deal Quintana, but as long as the return was the best it should not matter one bit from a baseball standpoint. Agreed^ Jerry never makes this deal if the Cubs had last in the world series. Now, it does not matter. (I am not suggesting that is the correct way of thinking)

Special K
While I disagree, I can see where he's coming from. It is conceivable that deals that make a competitor in your market better may not be best for your bottom line as far as losing fans, sales, etc. So why would you want to contribute to that? He's running a business.
southsider2k5
Reading the game threads the last couple of days, along with social media, you can absolutely tell why JR would fear a fan backlash from trading with the Cubs. The obsession is real for many.

Maybe I'm giving people too much credit, but that seems like nonsense to me.

So far this rebuild has been met with very good will. If JR thought that there could be enough of a fan revolt to change that, I could see it becoming a consideration. What do you think the typical fan reaction would be if it was perceived that the Sox helped the Cubs win the World Series?

Hypothetically if Reinsdorf is considering selling the Sox, the Cubs and how good they are could play a role in the value of the franchise. Again I'm probably giving too much credit, but "who cares" would be my response. The dumb fake rivalry with the Cubs ended on 10/26/2005 for me because it didn't matter any more, the only reason it should have ever mattered is that both teams were garbage for 80+ years and the only thing the fans had was the 2 teams playing each other. And it should be even more dead after 2016. If the Cubs have the best offer you take that offer, I don't care if it helps them win. I'd care more if we traded to Cleveland and they spent the next 5 years beating the Sox.

There is ALWAYS a rivalry between teams in the same city and teams in close proximity of one another. Dick Allen
If this story is true, Hahn and Theo were lying when they gave the timeline of the deal. I saw a quote from Hahn that said about 20-25% of the rumors on the intranet about the Sox is true. It is conceivable that deals that make a competitor in your market better may not be best for your bottom line as far as losing fans, sales, etc. So why would you want to contribute to that? He's running a business. That's a true statement from a business sense, however it hasn't seem to bother the organization over basically the entire length of their ownership that the Sox are playing second fiddle in their own town. And they certainly had real chances to increase their share of their base in this area...when the bought the team and then started signing good players, when they opened the new park and of course, when they won the World Series. They never aggressively took on the Cubs (save for Brooks Boyer's brilliant ad campaign "Us vs. Them.") So why should that really matter now? I mean remember "we're Chicago's American League team..." repeated time and time again when they bought the franchise through the period when Eddie Einhorn was heavily involved. (As if Sox fans were going to support the Cubs and Cub fans were going to support the Sox.)

I thought Hahn said it was basically done on Tuesday after agreeing on Eloy and Cease as main guys on Monday. I thought that it was just haggling over 2nd pieces the next few days but it sounds like it was actually talking it through with ownership. Dick Allen
They said they were texting final piece names all through the AS game which was Tuesday night. And the deal was agreed upon on Wednesday night, and announced Thursday morning. This story said it was agreed upon for days. I did hear JR would never have approved it if the Cubs didn't win the WS last year though. Edited July 26, 2017 by Dick Allen
SonofaRoache
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 11:29 AM) Again, to some people and from what overhear seems to be the type of fan who couldn't name more than 3 players on their team. I couldn't care less and don't know many people who are super passionate about it any more. Sox always come first but lets be honest, what would happen if the Cubs weren't here. We'd have more money to spend than any other team, we'd have sell outs every game, and 100 percent of Chicago baseball fans would cheer for us instead of only 40 percent. So we are competing for fans, resources, money, attention, advertising, etc. That creates a rivalry just like teams we compete for playoff berths does. Maybe not the same rivalry, but one nonetheless. Even on this passionate board we were rooting for losses all season long, except the last two days were it was clear we wanted to win. I was at Wrigley on Monday and Sox fans were more excited about that game than any of the games I went to at GR. chitownsportsfan
Couple points: 1) This is coming from Sherman at the NY Post. It didn't bubble up from any of the local guys or Nightengale. To me this immediately puts a question mark on the report. Hahn's words only strengthen that argument. 2) It makes zero sense from a business operations standpoint to have a three day lag on a trade of this magnitude. If anything it seems like a routine "owner needs to approve" got turned into the usual JR gossip.
