steveno89
http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/pitcher-s...ezs-2017-debut/ Good read for those interested in a scouting report for Lopez' debut^ The makings for a solid #3 starting pitcher are there, but he will have to work on throwing inside to right handers, and improving his change/curveball command to keep them down in the zone. The fastball is blistering. Edited August 15, 2017 by steveno89

jenksycat
The prospect of Rodon/Kopech/Lopez + the wildcard of what Gio/Hansen turn into + Dunning as a 5th starter + 60mil to spend if a couple bust in 2020 is....pretty pretty good. chitownsportsfan
I cannot for the life of me reconcile the scouting opinion of Lopez -- will struggle to start, is a 3rd starter type -- with the results and actual stuff. I don't want to start a "saber verse scouting" war but in this case the old school scouting worries seem absurd to me. To play devil's advocate here he was hanging a lot of offspeed stuff as the game went on. Does that mean he was wearing down because he's a smaller body type? I guess you can make that argument. I personally think he was over throwing a bit the first few innings for obvious reasons(I highly doubt you'll see him throwing 99 and 100 in a lot of starts) and that might have wore him down a bit. Dude definitely has the stuff to be a real quality major league starter.

Which part of this is getting called the "old school scouting worries" and which part is the "saber" part? A little lost on how to read this comment. Thanks. chitownsportsfan
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Which part of this is getting called the "old school scouting worries" and which part is the "saber" part? A little lost on how to read this comment. Thanks. Rowand elucidated some -- it's the "small frame" knock. The saber side is just his performance in AAA and in MLB last year. He needs to hone his command, but the K rate is more than there.
caulfield12
Frame-wise, he's bigger than the likes of Pedro Martinez, Jose Ventura or Roy Oswalt. Stroman, Sale (weight) and Gio Gonzalez also come to mind. There are always going to be general rules and outliers in projecting starting pitchers. bmags
Why do I read that and think he'll debut a cutter and just slay
