2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports

This is a decent compromise between Boston and Martinez. A front loaded contract makes sense for a 30 year old DH/RF. Now the opt-out is debatable but in this case, given Martinez' age and position, I don't think the opt-out is so bad. From Boston's POV, if Martinez does opt-out, say after the '19 season, that's a bunch of money coming off the books that they can in turn use to make a push for Arenado.

You do realize it's not that simple right? If he plays well and opts out the Redsox maybe happy they paid extra (probably about 10 million based on what EE got last year) but got their LF/DH for two years.

The problem is baseball is not that simple and tidy. He could play poorly or be injured for the first year he then walks away like a boss with most of his money paid upfront. Or he could have a down year or be injured for two years then opt out in year three. Or he could be a disappointment entirely and opt in for the entire duration. The point is regardless of what happens JDM is covered and will come out ahead.

The redsox absorbed a terrible amount of risk with no upside whatsoever. In fact in the best case scenario they pay a DH 50 million for two years. Which is beyond crazy.

You make it sound like he would have signed a 2year contract. No way. If he sucked, they were going to have to pay him for 5 years anyway. This way, they can have him for 2 years, and he is only opting out if he played well enough to justify the 2 years. For some reason, many teams that have players with opt outs tend to re sign them to longer more expensive deals when they opt out. In 2 years Martinez will be an older, most likely less valuable version of himself. If he opts out, it means the Red Sox made a great deal for 2 years. If he doesn’t, they would be in the same spot without an opt out. If the Red Sox are disciplined enough to realize 32 year old DHs tend not to be worth what JD would need if he opted out, because some team won’t, the opt out will work in their favor.. it is a great thing for the player. I am not saying it isn’t. They have a shot at even more money while guaranteed their entire contract if they suck or get hurt. But they would have had the later anyway. I would thin, unless he really hates it there, it’s more likely the opt out will not be used.

Florida firesale continues. It must feel like such a relief to get traded by a team that plays in an ugly empty stadium.

They should just disallow all professional sports teams from the state of Florida. Except for the Lightning I guess

So the Rays gave up Souza and got back Solak, Banda, and 2 PTBNL? That seems like a great deal for them. That could be a look at what Avi is worth too if he puts up another good first half.

Unfortunately Avi will only have 1 1/2 years of control at that point while Souza has three.

Yeah, but he is also younger so signing him to an extension makes even more sense for whatever team acquires him. I'm hoping that, and some team having a bigger need than currently, will make it so they are closer in value.

While our stadium is certainly not ugly, I don't get why I've recently seen Sox fans, both here and on Twitter, take jabs at other teams' attendance as if we're some sort of powerhouse in that arena

I was going for the ugly AND empty "jab" (wasn't really intended to be that way). Like you said, at least ours isn't ugly.

If the Yankees don't want Andujar, I wouldn't mind him coming to the Sox. This move makes some sense for the DBacks and Rays, but why did the Yankees do this?

So they have an option at 2B. Once Torres comes up, Drury falls back into more of Zobrist role filling in the infield and occasional OF, assuming Andujar is doing well himself. The move doesn't really impact Andujar much (at least not to open the year).
