Does anybody else think they may look at the market on Mike Moustakas? As it stands the White Sox really don't have a 3rd baseman. He is going into free agency on the younger side at 29 years old and won't command a long contract.

If the price gets dropped to 5/70 million maybe with some dollars front loaded to add more appeal wouldn't the White Sox have to consider. The last year he would be playing at age 33 which means you should be getting mostly prime years. He was an above average defender until last year when he became just slightly below which could have been an off year defensively.

Travis Sawhik wrote an interesting article coming to the conclusion that his power is real and could probably play even better in our park compared to a stadium like Kauffman that is a pitchers park.

Next years crop of 3Bs to me is not very good beyond Machado and Donaldson. I never put any stock in us actually being contenders next year for Manny Machado as the dollars and years would scare the Sox off. Josh Donaldson would be going into the following year at 33.

I think this would allow Jake Burger to take his time in the minors like we are doing with Collins. The White Sox could see how he develops, move either Burger or Moustakas when Abreu's contract is up.

It would be a wonderful move to sign him. But the fact is they're not going to spend any big money on any quality free agent. The objective for 2018 is to have the lowest payroll in MLB.

Personally, as of right now I want to see Yolmer get a full year there, or at least to get the first shot. He earned a full year as an IF starter with his performance last year and 2b and SS are currently spoken for.

Yolmer was a 2 fWAR player last year, and amazingly, Moustakas was a 2 fWAR player last year.

I just don't see a whole of big things happening this winter. The two guys who we might trade don't have any real trade value as of now in Abreu and Avi. We also aren't going out and signing anyone of note this winter. It is going to be a long and quiet winter.

I agree and the Sox would need to be blown away to trade Abreu, while waiting for a desperate team to overpay for Avi later in the year. I think the plan is to wait and develop current players, but I won't be surprised if there was a deal for a player like Yelich on the Marlins. The Sox need a cf, lefty hitter, a future leader and building block. He is signed thru 2022. Just depends what the return would be, but I think a good fit short and long term as he is only 26 now. Thoughts?

Not if you're getting someone that fits the timetable though as a long-term core piece

Still a little early - Sox still don't know exactly what they have in a lot of players on the 25 man.

Yelich is Eatonish.

I could see trying to parlay Abreu + Avi into a longer term developed "piece" - probably take a 3 or 4 way deal to pull it off. But still would prefer more deals where Sox find an underappreciated developed prospect (e.g. Eaton deal #1).

Hold onto the pitching -Sox have been a starter (or two) short in pretty much every year where they fell short of expectations.

Miami's farm is very weak and have had bad injury luck. If you could take on Prado and his salary it could lessen what you pay for a Yelich. Hope Prado rebounds and flip at or before deadline eating some salary. I would not trade a high prospect but you could put Guerrero in the package as maybe a second or third piece as you will probably lose him and he would be about #12 in their system. If Stanton won't waive his no trade, they may get desperate for salary relief.

I don't have an extensive knowledge of the MLB Rule 5 rules, but I'm quite sure that Guerrero cannot be added to anyone's 40 man roster at this point. He can certainly be traded, but why would any team trade for him prior to the Rule 5 when they would then proceed to lose him for nothing? He has absolutely no value on the trade market.

I’m definitely against moving any of our top pitching prospects. We need to do everything in our power to develop a formidable 1-2-3 internally, as buying high-end pitching via free agency is typically a costly decision in the long-run. And quite simply, the more high upside arms we have in the system, the more likely we’ll be able to develop that staff. Hansen is most definitely a key part of that.

Agreed, it seems much safer both with regards to AAV and overall safety to acquire hitters in free agency than it is to acquire pitching.

Tyler Chatwood got $13 mill a year over 3 years. There may be some possible upside to that move, but the dude has been a league average pitcher at best. To actually get a top flight arm takes $20-25 mill a year or significant prospects.

I think the price for a #2/3 starter in free agency will be $20-25 million per year, with #1 starters getting $30+ easily

Guerrero is about number 12 in the White Sox system. Is theirs really as good?
