StrangeSox
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 01:32 AM) Not surprising coming from this backasswards state. I think this is the law nationally, and it's something pushed by the gun lobby.
Jenksismyhero
So it sounds like the system failed in this case. He should not have been allowed to purchase the gun he used. Someone forgot to report his conviction which would have been picked up in his background check.
StrangeSox
The reporting I saw was that the military"forgets" to report this information routinely.

caulfield12
Greg, I think a lot of the frustration on the left was all those condolences and prayers from the likes of Paul Ryan for the victims...well, they were all literally in church, worshipping and praising God...how hollow does that sound? And yet not a single proposal is being considered on the part of the GOP to address the problem. If you’re unwilling to improve the background checks system, let’s at least attempt to improve our mental/psychological health system in America instead of cutting funding while giving the rich and corporations an unnecessary tax break. Kyyle23
caulfield I think a lot of the frustration comes from the representatives taking money from the NRA only offer thoughts and prayers instead of any reformative action to try to prevent these things from happening. IIRC Ryan has taken upwards of $170,000 and Cruz has taken over $300,000. Hollow indeed Remember a month ago when everyone was like "THESE BUMP STOCKS ARE CRAZY!". Yea, well, nobody did anything about it and actually made sure they will stay available.
BigSqwert
One person of color tries to make a bomb out of a shoe and EVERYONE has their shoes checked at the airport. GIGO. The system works fine, it is the human component that failed. And just what 'proposal' do you want them to pass that would have made a difference? i agree that mental health needs to be addressed. it has been that way for a while, not just some oversight that happens to be a problem for any one party. If someone named Abdul Zaire-Aziz shot up a church, but came here when he was 2 years old, 25 years ago, the reaction would be different than thoughts and prayer, let's not make this political. . The fact that this guy had access to weapons that allowed him to do what he did is a gigantic issue that will be ignored because of him being American and white. Just the price you pay when shooting s*** is fun. Edited November 7, 2017 by Dick Allen

StrangeSox
Republicans control the House and Senate. Why are Democrats to blame if Republicans didn't craft a bill and bring it to the floor, which the Democrats don't have the power to do?

You do realize that the Democrats can't bring a bill to the floor since your party controls both houses of Congress right? The good news is that Slidefire has completed dealing with the backlog of orders they received after their spectacular marketing successes in Vegas, so now there are tens of thousands more of those around. The law has to define what these things are in order to have the language be useful. “It shall be unlawful for any person to import, sell, manufacture, transfer or possess, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, a trigger crank, a bump-fire device or any part, combination of parts, component, device, attachment or accessory that is designed or functions to accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machine gun,” the bill states. That bolded part is what kills it. You replace a trigger or a spring and the gun fires a half second faster, you now violated a law. Springs break and get replaced all the time. Some people need a lighter trigger pull, but in theory that makes the gun shoot faster, so off to jail for you! yeah, that's common sense alright.
