Sleepy Harold
Jon Heyman @JonHeyman 55s chisox have been in active talks with red sox and others on star 1B jose abreu. boston was 1 of 4 finalists for abreu when he signed with chicago (milwaukee & houston were the others). Dick Allen
The Red Sox were initially going to use him at 3B.
Bob Sacamano
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 10:28 AM) The Red Sox were initially going to use him at 3B. I remember him signing while the Red Sox were still in the playoffs. I feel like that kind of hurts negotiations.

KnightsOnMintSt
What kind of return do the White Sox get for him? I've always thought that Jose was very undervalued.
southsider2k5
Assuming they are willing to part with a solid package, that really is a great fit for Jose. They need exactly him.
KnightsOnMintSt
Could we get Groome and Chavis for Abreu?
Dick Allen
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 10:30 AM) I remember him signing while the Red Sox were still in the playoffs. I feel like that kind of hurts negotiations. And they sucked the next season. They had Papi, and Napoli filling the 1b/DH spots. I wonder how bad he would have been at 3B, especially when he was a bigger guy.
FT35
Devers + Jackie Bradley Jr. sounds like a good place to start! : )

TheTruth05
Groome + JBJ? I'd honestly hate to lose Jose.
steveno89
QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 11:35 AM) Groome + JBJ? I'd honestly hate to lose Jose. Boston's farm appears to be pretty weak right now. Devers is not going anywhere, but pretty much anyone else would have to be considered fair game I would imagine? southsider2k5
QUOTE (Tony @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 10:38 AM) I'll be more sad when Jose goes than any of Sale/Eaton/Quintana. Totally agree. I love the guy.

flavum
Abreu will be appreciated for his professional play and hitting prowess, but he doesn’t fit with what the Sox are trying to cultivate. 31 in January. That doesn’t fit the sustained success they’re going for in 2020-2024.
Dick Allen
If there is one GM not afraid to give up prospects, it's DD.

Jose Abreu
This sucks if it's for JBJ as the centerpiece. I am not changing my name to Jackie Bradley Jr.
Eminor3rd
I'm obviously pro-rebuild and also believe that the Sox still need more talent in the system to really do this right, but I don't like this fit. Obviously there's a price for any player, but I don't see anything left in the Red Sox system that would make sense. I've said it before, but I think Abreu is worth more to the White Sox than he is on the open market.

I've said it before, but I think Abreu is worth more to the White Sox than he is on the open market. I agree with this but now is the time to move if they are truly going to move him. I read this one of two ways: Sox leaked Red Sox to the media in order to press some other suitors into action on Abreu in talks. Also possible, Dombrowski floated the possibility of trading for Abreu because they are in the Hosmer/Martinez market and Boras hasn't even started moving. steveno89
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) They dont have the chips. I might agree with you. I just don't like what the Red Sox system offers right now. Chavis is not a good enough prospect in my opinion to headline a deal, as there are defensive questions with him at 3B (.911 fielding percentage is not great at A+/AA). He has power, but I'm not sold since his numbers took a considerable hit after his promotion to AA. Outside of pedigree, Groome has not done much to prove himself professionally yet. He seems to have talent, but he's way too risky to headline a potential Abreu deal at this point. Right now I do not see a fit
Jose Abreu
IMO we could just be helping them posture in the Stanton talks.

I hadn't thought about the bolded, but it makes a ton of sense. Dombrowski must be aware that he's Boras' best buyer on both of those guys, and he doesn't want to let Boras drag it out until March.
