Yep. I guess we could try to grab another team's?

Exactly what I was thinking. Nestor Cortes looks particularly interesting. Franmil Reyes an OF the Padres let go also would be a great pick.

Catcher list looks very interesting. Don't think there's a need there though. Don't get protecting Basabe (or a few other names) over Guerrero at all.

Nestor Cortes has some great numbers for a loogy. No idea what his profile actually is.

http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/ind...tor-cortes-lhp/ Basically an undersized crafty lefty whi uses deception and different arm angles and pitch speeds ranging from slow to slower.

Guererro doesn't project particularly well as a LOOGY. He's a touch-based lefty who's bread and butter is his change up and his breaking ball is still coming along. Guererro has put up some strong peripherals but he's not a guy that a scout is going to fall in love with or a guy that has the stuff to survive in a "hidden" type roll. He certainly could be taken but I am just struggling to find the role that would make sense. Unless some noncontender likes him enough to position him as a longman in a mop up role I'm not sure where fits.

Considering the roster of non-competing, rebuilding teams continues to grow, I absolutely expect some team will roster him as a starter and just let him take his lumps a la Dylan Covey.

He’s the top left-hander in our system and will start the year in AAA, why didn’t we protect him again?

Because he really doesn't project to do much at the MLB level with his slow and slower stuff?

Really sucks he was left off. Feel like we definitely could have made room (couldn't they cut Hansen sooner?).

I still do not understand not protecting Guerrero given our lack of left handed pitching depth in the system.

Diving deeper into his 2017 numbers, there is a pretty stark contrast between his home and away splits. He was significantly better at home in pitcher friendly Birmingham, than away. His peripherals like FIP and xFIP are pretty strong.

All in all, I am puzzled as to why we wouldn't protect him? Currently I have the Sox roster at 36, and I'm not sure why Guerrero didn't warrant a spot?

Why keep Covey over Guerrero? I've seen all I need to determine that Covey sucks.

I think you’re really underrating his stuff. Left-handers have been successful with far less stuff than him. I think he has a real chance of being a quality back of the rotation starter and a rebuilding team with nothing to lose by using him as a long reliever for a year will likely take him. We just did this with Dylan Covey and he’s a far less interesting prospect Guerroro (and right-handed).

The problem is that HE hasn't been that successful.

Hell, the Tigers can take him and insert him into the rotation.

They must see something in him the rest of us don’t. Didn’t his velocity play up quite a bit when moved to the pen? Maybe they got him pegged as a future reliever with some more minor league seasoning.

Guerrero? Seems like he’s been pretty succeful every year except 2016. His ERA from last year is very misleading if you followed him start to start.

My only guess is that the White Sox did not think all that highly of his stuff playing at the mlb level (although as a young lefty I am not sure why he wasn't given the chance in 2018 to earn a bullpen or rotation spot?).

And that’s fine, but it just seems like it’s almost a certainty that he gets selected in the Rule 5 and if so they should have looked into moving him another minor leaguer that didn’t require protection.

Mentioned him in another thread. Saw him strike out Rafael Devers on a pitch he dropped down on. Doesn't have elite stuff, but is crafty as all hell for a kid his age. Would be a very good pick.

I wonder if Hahn takes a look at Trey Ball too as a lefty in the bullpen. Dude has struggled with control, but his name was mentioned before in Sox rumors and am betting the Sox like him (they obviously have scouted the Red Sox farm alot). Former #7 overall pick so he's got the talent. Could see him benefiting being in the pen long term anyways.
