How does it make any sense that the two best offers are Cards and Sox? Those clubs couldn't be further apart in their windows.

The "calculated risk" is that you try to court Machado in 2018, and get a better look at a player before deciding whether you want to invest $300+ million in him or not. If you do not feel like he will resign with you, then you absolutely flip him at the deadline to the highest bidder to recoup what you gave away to acquire him.

If I am Machado I certainly am interested in getting to free agency, but I would be interested in hearing what a team that just traded for me would offer in terms of an extension. He's getting a mega deal no matter what, but a down season or injury might impact how much he ends up getting.

Because the Sox interest makes zero sense

Why?

It makes perfect sense. He will be in his prime when the white sox have their window to compete. As long as thy are convinced they can sign him to a long term deal, it's perfect. they will have a very low payroll with the young players for the next 5 years.

Not saying this means anything, but 14 minutes ago Delmonico posted a picture on Instagram with Machado that was taken in 2010....https://www.instagram.com/p/BcsqSiMnlQJ/?taken-by=nickydelmonico

The Cardinals and White Sox are both going after a player who's decision on what team he's going to play for will be decided via an Instagram post. That sounds familiar...

How in the world can you be convinced you can sign him long term? The dude is going to free agency. There is a zero percent chance that anyone that acquires Machado will get him to sign an extension before he reaches free agency. He'd be a complete idiot to sign an extension right now.

Why? Because you are getting a guy for one year and we are not contending this year. Cmon. He's not going to sign with the White Sox. Of that I am 100 percent sure. To give up 4-5 young alleged can't miss studs we acquired through deals for one year of Manny makes no sense at all. This is like keeping Sale or Q when we were gutting the team. That also would have made no sense. If you are gutting the team you don't add a one-year wonder. It's ridiculous.

Folks ... Machado will not be signing with the White Sox. He will be a free agent who will receive an epic contract. He's not going to sign now just because he's afraid he's going to suddenly suck during his season afore free agency. Makes zero sense for a rebuilding team. Now next offseason, sure try to sign him, make your offer, but folks I don't believe in Santa or the Tooth Fairy. In modern day baseball, Jerry and the partners do not sign Manny Machado 10 years 300 to 500 million.

Who is going to trade for him with one year of control left? You’re pretty much looking at contenders with 3B/SS needs that can actually afford to offer him a $300M+ contract in the offseason. Add in the “won’t do business with the Yankees rule” and that right there doesn’t leave a ton of teams. Seriously, what teams make sense and actually have the assets to acquire him?

If you are a contender, sure you could do that. Mortgaging the future for a one-year wonder who could lead you to the promised land. The Cubs actually should do what it takes to get him. Gut the remaining portion of the farm for Machado. He'd probably be what they need to win another WS.

I will say for a fact that Machado will not get $500 million over 10 years...that is totally absurd. Right now the highest paid player in the mlb is Clayton Kershaw @ $33 million per year.

Right now Harper/Machado are expected to land contracts in the $350-400 million range.

Phillies believe their offer for Machado is not strong enough to make a trade happen. #Orioles want Sixto Sanchez.

Clark’s guess is out. Hold onto your butts!

They don't have a spot for him
