2018 MLB Draft Order

The White Sox have the 4th pick in the 2018 draft but their 2nd round pick will continue to move around until the end of the offseason. I will continue to update this list as the offseason goes on. There are 30 1st round picks and there are 9 Competitive Balance Round A picks. Also, once Cobb, Hosmer, Cain, Moustakas, Holland, and Sanatan sign, those teams get 1st round picks between the 1st round and competitive balance round. I will assume they sign and put the picks in to start and then take away and move the White Sox 2nd rounder up as guys off the the board. The Cubs and Cardinals will receive picks after the 2nd round once Arrieta, Davis and Lynn sign elsewhere. Carlos Santana signed a 3 year $60 million deal with the Phillies. The Phillies will forfeit their 2nd round pick to do so thus moving the White Sox from #49 to #48.

Not necessarily true. The Rockies technically give up their 3rd pick. If Holland re-signs with them (highly unlikely) they'd forfeit their actual 2nd rounder which doesn't move Sox up at all.

Those teams still get a pick after round 1 for losing a free agent that offer a QO to. Revenue sharing recipients lose their 3rd highest pick to sign a QO FA. Big market revenue providers (Sox lumped in here) forfeit their 2nd choice to sign a FA. Teams that are over the luxury tax line (SF, Washington, Boston, LAD) would forfeit their 2nd and 5th rounder to sign a QO FA. Does this help?

And it certainly looks like a system that can be "worked" by small market teams, like the Rockies did. Instead of re-signing your own guy, let him go, sign a player from another team, and move up in the draft.

This could also be a reason as to why they would rather have Darvish instead of Arrieta. Recover at least something by letthing him walk and not having to give up anything to sign Darvish as opposed to Cobb and Lynn.

Exactly. If they sign Darvish, they will have their 1st rounder, 2nd rounder and two additional picks after round $2. That probably gets them close to an additional $3 million to spend on the draft. It's not a huge deal when you are trying to championships but it doesn't hurt. They need to reload that system a bit.

Teams like Sox and Phillies are really at a disadvantage. Philly had to forfeit the 3rd selection in the 2nd round to sign Santana and the 3rd selection in the 3rd round to sign Arrieta. The Twins and Brewers gave up their 3rd rounders for Lynn and Cain but still have their 1st, 2nd, and a competitive balance selection. It's insane
