KnightsOnMintSt
I really hope that they give Adam Engel a full season of starting, or at least considerable at-bats. While his offense may not have been where we wanted it to be, the defense was oustanding, and he has great speed. 2018 is one of those years where I would really like guys like Engel, as well as Delmonico and Davidson, to get considerable at-bats because I think they all have that potential to be apart of the teams passed 2019. He received a decent amount of ABs in 2017. I'm sure he will get some more in 2018, but he is going to have to hit a lot better, and hopefully the White Sox have a couple of other guys who can push him for playing time. Not many guys get as many ABs as he has received with his results. Edited January 17, 2018 by Dick Allen

They should both make the roster out of ST, but barring any amazing changes in ST, Leury should be in CF on opening day and Engel should have to earn the position back. Y2Jimmy0
He might be on the team because of his defense but nothing should be given to him. He was one of the very worst players in baseball last year. 336 plate appearances 6 Homers 35% K Rate .247 BABIP (was unlucky) .166/.235/.282 wOBA .230 wRC+ 37. -0.7 fWAR. I think there will be much better overall options in the OF. His defense is spectacular but his .OPS is barely over .500.

I agree, but the way I look at it, 2018 is almost like a practice year. Guys like Moncada, Giolito, and Lopez will get "pressure free" starts, that I think will really help them in 2019. I dont think Engel will be a starter beyond 2018, but I would love to see the development withe the bat because the glove is so strong. I would actually like to see him used a little less next year. After Leury went out, he started pretty much every single game no matter what the match up was. I'd like to see him brought along a little slower with plugging him into places where he has a better chance to succeed being used as the primary technique instead of an every single day starter. Let him grow in situations where the odds are more in his favor, and utilized Leury in match ups as well. Charlie Tilson is also going to be a factor here assuming he doesn't get ran over in the parking lot on opening day. Ryan Cordell has also played a bit of CF

I dont think Engel will be a starter beyond 2018, but I would love to see the development withe the bat because the glove is so strong. I'd love to see it too. He puts up a .680 OPS next year and with his glove he earns the starting position back and maybe keeps it until Robert takes it away. That's just a huge jump for him. Not an impossible jump, but a big one. You're totally right that in the 3b, DH, LF, and CF slots, our main goal this year is to find a couple competent players. Find a couple starters and fill out the bench before hitting the FA market next offseason, and that helps us seriously load up in 2019. If Engel could hit well enough to even be a bench player going forwards, that eliminates some of our disastrous bench moves like Bonifacio and Keppinger, and that's useful too. bmags
I want to ride out this Leury wave. He was really good and then dropped off just before his injury kept him out all season. Engel, with his batting stance stuff, just feels unreliable. He's nice to have on options and fodder to call up for his great defense. GenericUserName
I would almost rather let him get everyday ABs in AAA and see if he can develop anything resembling an average hit tool. It would also have the added benefit of keeping his service time down because I think even if he can never hit in the bigs, he could be a valuable piece when we are contending as a late inning defense and baserunning guy with the expanded roster and playoffs. I agree, it looked like Leury's journey was over and then he went to AAA for 2 more years and produced, then it turned out to be somewhat legit going back to MLB. I don't see why Engel can't do the same.

Squirmin' for Yermin
The best he will ever be is a backup OF. And a 4th OF with great D and speed isn't a bad thing to have.. but lets not act like he can be a starter.. His hit tool is too bad

Leury has outstanding speed. played as well, if not better, than Engel defensively, hits from both sides of the plate and showed some pop. Everyone else is in line behind him and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Engel is eventually released.
