Keith Law White Sox System Write-Up

Here is the review of system from Keith Law. Really good stuff. He has White Sox as 4th best system. Apparently he doesn't hate them anymore.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id...ntral-prospects

He has it like this:

1. Eloy Jimenez

2. Michael Kopech

3. Luis Robert

4. Alec Hansen

5. Dylan Cease

6. Dane Dunning

7. Jake Burger

8. Blake Rutherford

9. Micker Adolfo

10. Zack Collins

11. Gavin Sheets

12. Spencer Adams

13. Carson Fulmer

14. Ian Clarkin

15. Luis Alexander Basabe

16. Luis Gonzalez

17. Zack Burdi

18. AJ Puckett

Some notes: Expects more growth from Dylan Cease, sees Dunning as future mid-rotation starter, Burger is bat-first with position questions but should hit enough regardless, Rutherford the Sox bough low but he needs to hit the ball in the air more, Adolfo was a positive review. Plus-plus arm and plus pull power. RF profile. He doesn't believe Collins can catch, Sees Sheets as having the floor of a platoon 1B and believes in the power, Adams is a strike thrower that could be a back end starter, Thinks Fulmer is a reliever but a good one, blamed many of Basabe's struggles on the knee injury, and sees Puckett as a #5 starter.

Is there a reason for 18? Does he go for FV like all 45 value and above prospects?

Happy to hear positive stuff on Micker. Last year at least with Longenhagen, people kept asking and the response was "he hasn't really changed anything in his swing to get excited about", but over the winter things have changed. That means to me:

- industry scouts are higher on him.

- He looked good in whatever instructionals or winter league he was in.

I'm excited for Basabe this year.

Surprised he doesn't have Seby Zavala in there after the breakout 2017 he had. He's older than most prospects, but could end up being a solid catching option?

I wonder how high Collins would be if he believed he can catch. If Collins can stay at catcher he has tremendous value.

If Collins projected to be a solidly average catcher, or slightly above average he would be a sure fire top 100 prospect with his plate discipline and power.

If Law doesn't believe that Collins can catch then he definitely doesn't think Zavala can either

I posted this elsewhere but interesting nonetheless, Baseball America said that Zevala was actually behind Collins in catching ability. Now that conflicts with Futuresox who said he's average, but fair to say that for as much as we talk about the work collins needs to do, so does Seby.

Collins is also younger. Some similar stats this year though.

Collins at High A: 130 wRC+, .367 wOBA

Collins at AA: 166 wRC+, .414 wOBA

19 homers

Zavala at A: 139 wRC+, .376 wOBA

Zavala at High A: 145 wRC+, .387 wOBA

21 homers

It will be interesting to see them both at Birmingham together.

That may be the most interesting thing of the MiLB season watching Collins and Zavala play. One of them is going to be the future Sox catcher and I have no idea who.

I wonder if Carlton Fisk would like to make some visits to Birmingham this summer? Although Birmingham might be a tough sell. Maybe wait till one or both get to Charlotte.

If that's the case why even put stock into him?

Nobody outside of the White Sox has said definitively that he can stay at catcher. I'm high on the offensive profile but he needs to stay at C for it not to be fairly ordinary

I feel like he can hit 25 HR with a .380 OBP. That's what Matt Carpenter did last year at 1B and ended with a 2.9 WAR. What's wrong with that offensive profile for a 1B? It's not like if he can't catch then he's worthless. His bat will play just fine at 1B or DH, even if he fails at catcher.

I'd like to see Collins bump up his averages and power numbers this year. The plate discipline is good just a little puzzling why that's not translating to better contact when he does swing. Because you'd think that would mean he's swinging at good pitches to hit. Only other explanation would be they are junkballing him all the time or there is a certain pitch/count he's getting exploited on.

Like others have said. Those offensive numbers as a catcher is all star material. As a 1b/dh, he's a dime a dozen type player. So I do agree he really needs to stick to catcher.

However, why is the entire white sox organization saying he will catch and trust he can. But everyone outside of the organization doesn't think he can? Are they just not seeing his everyday work improvement? I guess if I was Collins, I'd rather have my own team trust in me than vise versa. As long as the white sox think he can stick, he will stay behind the plate.

The positional adjustment alone is worth 2.5 WAR, so a 2.9 WAR 1B is a 5.4 WAR C, provided neither offense nor defense fall off.

He's not the only one that thinks this.

Correct, that appears to be consensus. Kiley McDaniel said the other day that he sees him fitting in like an Evan Gattis -- a guy ho finds a spot in the lineup every day but is the second or third catcher.

Pretty harsh if you ask me.

(yes I know it is a typo)
