Can't remember who it was, but I seem to remember the same thing happening last year and it wasn't for an imminent move. Eventually one or more of the NRIs are going to be added as well.

But they won't add those guys until ST starts to come to a close. Plus it seems like it would be even easier to get a player through waivers at the end of ST.

He was adding to my post. Smith was outrighted at the start of spring training last year--and nobody was added right away.

 

We'll see if somebody is added now, but I don't think it's a given.

Excuse me for thinking that it could've been a resposne to "Eventually one or more of the NRIs are going to be added as well.", which is also part of the comment he quoted, and actually closer to the end of the quote.

 

edit- and I know Smith isn't an NRI anymore but I figured it could've been a mistake or something

It’s a great time to get someone through, although I fail to see any reason why a team would claim Covey. Whether or not it leads to an immediate addition, who knows. Maybe there is a possibility of something and they want them to be good to go right away. As to last year, maybe they were close to bringing someone in but it didn’t work out, or maybe just making space whenever you can makes sense.

The only thing is he is kind of repetitive with Delmonico. Plus the Sox have 11 outfielders on their 40. I guess with Leury on the roster being so flexible, it’s possible. I think they think they have a shot at Tillman, or maybe even Moustakas, although that is Boras so unlikely.

He is kind of repetitive with Nicky, but honestly don’t see the point of letting Davidson be the everyday DH. He’s an upgrade there and theoretically has some “flipping” upside with another strong first half. DH is the one spot I’m ok with getting a veteran if said player has some potential trade value. I’m not a huge Dickerson fan myself, but I can see the Sox making this type of move.

 

I was actually hoping they would target Tillman at the beginning of the offseason, but I can’t see them adding another starter to guaranteed money with Gonzalez in the fold. And I think the Sox are all in on the Machado front and won’t add anyone that blocks that to a certain extent.

I don’t disagree, but I don’t see plan B coming before plan A in this case. If Donaldson has another strong season without any major injuries he could be the backup plan despite his age.

I love that Nightengale said that. Prior to the 2017-2018 offseason, I viewed him as a White Sox mouthpiece, but he has had an absolutely terrible track record since last October. The dude has been wrong on nearly everything. Him saying that Manny is practically already a Yankee means nothing to me

I wouldn't be shocked if he did end up a Yankee. It just means they wouldn't be able to go long-term with Judge post-arbitration years most likely. We say the same about Harper going to the Cubs only with Bryant instead of Judge.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, it's very possible that he ends up a Yankee. But all this "it's all but guaranteed, it would be the biggest shock of all time if he's not a Yankee" talk is a joke. Keep in mind that the whole "it's his dream to be a Yankee" narrative began when some porn star who happened to be a Yankees fan tweeted it out, and people ran with it because she had the blue check mark on Twitter.

Hahaha!! This made me laugh! I’m kind of with you...I never really saw the draw outside of him not being in our plans, so let’s get some innings out of his arm.

He’d be a potential flip candidate. The 600+ DH plate appearances are an asset and the Sox have to decide what is the best use of them. I’ve personally seen enough of Matt Davidson to move onto a different option. I won’t be upset if they simply use the spot to rotate a bunch of young guys, but I’m totally ok if they want to roll the dice on the right veteran. IMO, DHing isn’t easy and a lot of players struggle with the routine. Dickerson was pretty awesome as a DH last year (SSS I know) and his power could really play up at the Cell. A strong first half along with his ability to play the OF (even if we don’t use him their regularly) & his cheap ass salary could result in him netting us something of value at the deadline. I can see the logic if the Sox’s scouts are high on him and the price is basically nothing.

Love the idea of making the DH another spot for the kids to play—my only problem with rotating players on positions is that it’s tough for a single player to find a rhythm and stand out at 1 particular position—even DH. The result is a handful of guys out of rhythm, making fundamental mistakes and overthinking their swing to the tune of a lot of 0-4’s and it’s deceiving to the talent evaluators trying to decide who to keep/cut. Kind of reminds me of the parents who have their kid in soccer, baseball, golf, marching band, chess club, basketball, hockey and swimming. I feel sorry for those kids because they never get a chance to refine their skills and get GOOD at anything. They could be a world class swimmer and not even know it because after an hour in the pool, they’re off to the golf course!

 

Baseball is so much a sport of routine. Even winning and losing become routine. Time is still on our side now to give players long looks at their primary position and let them learn and master the nuances of that position.
