bmags
When soxtalk was down I decided to get some OOTP action going. Things I like about OOTP: - The irrational attachment you get to players who succeed out of nowhere (like Maikel Cleto, who became a Cy Young winner for me) Things I don't like about OOTP: - I'm terrible at it - When a prospect you like is given an attitude problem and you kinda carry it with you into real life (michael kopech) So, I read the OOTP forums. But just kinda want to check. How much do you guys actually control when you play and how often? To start season, I: - Set up minors, drop dead weight and have AI add minor league free agents - Search for any guys with 60+movement or 65+ speed and usually add some of them to minor league FAs - Add some FAs I like Sim a month: - Find that 80% of my team is injured and will start the beginning of soon being 25 games udner - Find all of my prospects are failing hopelessly - Try to make trades where the computer demands I give 6 45+ prospects for a 50 prospect - Get bored and then just start swapping 1-1 major leaguers for major leaguer Sim to draft: - Think I draft reallyg reat for high character, high contact or control in pitchers early, high power and speed and movement later. - Sign them - Cut dead weight in minors Sim to to week before trade deadline: - Find all prospects are terrible - Major league team is 30 games under, 10 guys on DL - All draft picks are bad. This is pretty typical for me I'm wondering if I hit the limits of amount I can actually spend time on the game vs amount required to actually be good at it. ChiliIrishHammock24
The thing I always struggled with in OOTP was deciding if I wanted to see players TRUE attributes, or attributes my scouting department thought they were. I wrestled with this so much that I eventually stopped playing, among other reasons obviously. On the one hand, it's cool that you should want a top notch scouting department to be accurate and the mystery of not knowing if a trade or draft pick was correct or not was intriguing. On the other hand, I was struggling with not knowing if my top prospect actually sucks, or is just doing poorly. And if he's just doing poorly, I can figure out ways to try to fix it. If my scouting department thinks he's great, but his TRUE attributes suck, I'm wasting all my time and frustration with a guy who was never going to pan out anyway. I struggled with this concept because just turning it off seemed like cheating. And sometimes I WOULD briefly toggle it off to check on a rating before I committed to a trade or major signing. But then I felt like, well what's the point if I am not willing to mess up. It got in my head so much. lol
bmags
I did not know true attributes were available. But also the first few seasons its a head trip trying to separate real life prospect trajectories with the games. Like I had to basically trade kopech for trash because he was causing locker room revolts.
OmarComing25
The two things I struggled with were 1) Trying to get fair value in prospects for your veterans. I took over the Sox in 2017 and when trying to trade Quintana other teams acted insulted when I inquired about anyone's top prospects, even in a straight up 1 for 1 deal. Ended up trading him to the Yankees for Jordan Montgomery and Miguel Andujar (and this was before their stock rose this past year). Abreu was having a monster year one season and when I tried to trade him at the deadline all the offers I got were complete trash. 2) Guys turn into pumpkins really fast. OOTP seems to think that once you hit 32-33 you immediately become worthless. There were multiple guys who I signed in their early 30s coming off great seasons that were never good again. Thankfully Dylan Covey turned into an ace and won the Cy Young in 2021 and led the White Sox to a title. bmags
I turned the aging thing to be more gradual for sure. Obviously people get older and worse, but it would be like they hit 30 and then are hitting .190 with a .250 slugging percentage.
SoxAce
OOTP is where I learned Steve Harnden is the greatest GM of all time.
