LittleHurt05
We've had lots of talk about how starters aren't pitching very long anymore, specifically avoiding the 3rd time up against a lineup. The Rays have been taken it to a new extreme, having multiple bullpen days where guys are only expected to pitch 3 or 4 innings. Now they are going further and having Sergio Romo, a late inning set up guy, start the game vs LA tomorrow. Partly because his off speed stuff matches up well with the top of their order. This is the future of baseball I think. http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/rays/2018/05/18/rays-have-another-new-different-pitching-plan-starting-sergio-romo-vs-angels/

Who knew the cubs were the future back then?
iWiN4PreP
This is a *very* interesting discussion, I think. Starting from the old days when SP's would have no problem throwing 9 innings and so... Merging to the present where pitchers can't throw past 6 IP or 100 pitchers and now we are seeing SP end their night after they throw too many 'stressful' pitches (tough situations). Then looking a head to the future where the game might be a team of RP and playing match ups due to analytics. Not sure how I feel about all this yet, but it's a great discussion. Good thread. zenryan
The way Romo has been pitching, this has the potential to blow up in the Rays face and the baseball media will have a field day. Just like the media had a field day when the Rays said they were using “bullpen” days for the 4th/5th rotation spots. The media went crazy thinking it was going to be like 6 pitchers throwing a game and the bullpen was going to be blown up. It really was just limiting rookie pitchers innings and trips through the batting order. Chirinos has 5 starts and was named the 4th starter before landing on the DL. Yarbrough has 3 starts for 15IP and 7 reliefs appearances for another 19IP (3 of those relief appearances were for 4,4,5IP) and will be coming in for Romo tomorrow. Be interesting to see if more teams start doing this when they have young pitchers on the ML roster, especially in rebuilding years.
zenryan
Strikes out all three hitters in first inning. Romo will get the start Sunday afternoon.
BigHurt3515
So they had Romo throw an inning then bring in a guy that threw 6.1. I don't quite get the philosophy

They should bring in a middle reliever for the first 2 batters in a lower leverage situation and bring in Romo for the 3-4-5 hitters. This would be the best matchups. This is going down that "slippery slope."
