Jose Abreu

Recommended Posts

With a little over two months until the trade deadline there is little doubt that teams, along with the White Sox will explore a trade for Jose Abreu.  With 1.5 years left of control and him still producing offensively we should be receiving calls.  Now what Hahn asks for is everbody guess because Abreu's value is hard to guess.  1B/DH players just aren't valued like they used to be.  There are a lot of contending teams that could upgrade at 1B. What would people expect from teams that may need a 1B in a trade for Abreu?  and what teams may be interested?

I think the general consensus is pretty straight forward... You only trade him if you can get a game changing prospect or a pair of really good prospects.

Jose is very valuable to our team and could help us in our future productive years, but if we can get another top prospect for him we do it.

IF the market dictates that, then we trade him happily.

If we were to be offered a guy like David Dahl, we would be insane to pass that up.  I think that could be about the top end of what we get with maybe little else involved.  And I'd be fine with that. Even that may be too much

That's the area where I would target. Dahl or McMahon.  The Rockies don't seem to know how to use their prospects and are a great fit for Abreu. Abreu is a .300 hitter with 30 HR potential and 100+ RBI's.

if people plan on this team contending by 2020...I don't think it's a great idea to trade Abreu.  He's shown zero signs of even remotely slowing down.  Unless it's an overwhelming offer...no thanks.  He's by far the most productive player this team has.  Moncada will be there soon.  Eloy will be as well.  Other than that...what are you hanging your hat on?

I disagree

You're wrong. If you can get an Eloy like prospect or a package like the Nats gave up for Eaton, you do it. If he wants to be here for the competitive run, he can be resigned in 2020. I like Abreu, but stacking the deck as much as possible for 2020-2023 has to be the organizational priority right now.

Collins, Zavala, Dunning, Hansen, the few pen arms in AA and AAA, the crapload of talent in WS and Kanny, and the #4 overall pick on June 4.

The problem is our fans don’t want to pay any of the current players they only want to pay the unknown guys from other teams.      just give Jose 12 to 15,000,000 a year for four years and call it good but no our fans don’t want to pay White Sox players

That is likely not enough. I'm thinking a 4 year 72 to 80 mil extension after this year. Buy out his final year of arb plus 3 more seasons.

Nobody's going to pony up 18 to 20 mill a year considering he's probably older than his listed age. I'd say if he gets 15 mill a year he's tapped out there. I could see it between 12 and 15, couldn't you? Jose should be thrilled to get 60 million for four years from his favorite team, the Sox. Then one year deals like Melky.

If you think his market is so limited, then what would be the harm in trading him and resigning him in 2020?

Why would he be older than his listed age?  I get it’s been a problem in the Dominican where there’s plenty of incentive to buy a new identity both for baseball reasons and unique situations on the island.  (For example, discrimination against people of Haitian descent.). But Cubans Jose’s age had no hope of going to America to play baseball and Cuba’s a dictatorship.  Way harder to get false documents in a police state than it is in the D.R.  Plus, he got famous in Cuba as a very young man.  It’s possible he’s older than his listed age, but I doubt it.  Is there any evidence?

You truly are uninformed & ignorant.  Similar or worse players have been getting AAVs of $20M.  And why is he probably older this his listed age?
