GenericUserName
Here's a #WhiteSox draft surprise: 33rd round prep 3B Bryce Bush, #402 draft prospect per BA, will sign today. Was seen as a long shot to sign this year, Miss St commit. Raw but elite bat speed. — FutureSox (@FutureSox) July 4, 2018 Wow, massive signing. I didn't think we had any chance. That’s a great get, I did not expect us to sign any of the remaining high school after Walker’s bonus came in a half million above slot. flavum
Nice signing. Just watched some BP video. Short and quick swing that you gotta like.

This is outstanding news and get for this system. Didn't think Sox had a chance in hell to sign Bush.
oldsox
How does that 5% penalty rule work? Is it 5% of that player's slot value, or 5% of the entire pool?

You can go over your total pool by 5% and not lose a pick. Instead you pay 75 cents on the dollar on the amount you go over.

The White Sox are $199,000 over right now. They can spend like $330K more to stay right at 5%. Could theoretically give Bush $450K (includes the $125K pick value). This doesn't account for Davis Martin though.

I didn't think we had a chance either after not saving any money from Madrigal.

ShandyMan
I’m assuming we aren’t signing Martin then? either way, I thought we had no shot on Bush. Huge get and could have possibly been a big name down the road

Yeah, I guess Martin isn't signing. That is weird, as he's a college guy.
Y2Jimmy0
Something to keep in mind is that Mississippi State has switched coaching staffs. Could have something to do with the decision to sign.

So maybe he was promised a bigger role and he thinks he can get drafted even higher next year. Plus, wasn't his team eliminated in the CWS? Maybe he wants to try and win it all. Yeah, but most college juniors sign. The only way he would do this is if he thinks he's a top 5-10 rounder next year. A college player loses a lot of negotiating power when returning for his senior year. Even if he were to go in rounds 6-10 he'd be expected to sign under slot. thxfrthmmrs
That worked out incredibly well for the Sox. Not sure how much Martin is above slot, or if he is. If he isn't, we could possibly throw another $290k to Del Castillo or Montgomery to see if they bite.
