Full slot?!  Don’t they just have to pay full slot for pick 5?  Hmm.  Oh well.  I wasn’t that big a fan, so obviously I’m going to nitpick.  Would have been nice to get one more high school guy.

This was the last guy unsigned in the top 10 rounds for the Sox.  The highest remaining unsigned pick is at #14.

Sure, but now that ship has sailed, plus they must have worked the whole budget around full slot value.  Still, looks like they got some value down lower.  Pretty much the whole value of the draft is the first round so...  I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

It hasn't.  They still have about 300k over slot value they could offer to Martin without losing a draft pick, most likely he will get something like 25 to 60k over slot which is what the picks in front of him got.

They definitely don't have enough to go after the late HS picks though.

I'm guessing the late high school picks are in case something goes funky, they can throw some money elsewhere.

They also can be just in case some player surprises, or changes his mind when faced with a $500k check for the first time...or they can also be strategic, to get to know a kid before he goes to college that you might draft later, or even to block another team from drafting the guy when they might actually be able to sign them.

Looks like 33rd round pick Bryce Bush changed his mind when presented with a sizable check, because he apparently signed per FutureSox.

Yea most us of have to work 30 yrs to even come close to saving $500K and thats if you make wise investments and get out when the market plunges but it's extremely difficult with a family and hard to be right for  that many years without at  some point getting stung.

The other factor is teams can agree to pay future college tuition and not have it count against their bonus allotment.  A half million dollars, free college, and a chance to chase your dream is at least tempting.

So back to Madrigal . I loved that pick. I know people don't like he has little power and makes a lot of weak contact but weak contact is better than striking out and thats just going to happen when you don't K a lot. There's a lot to be said for the Boggs and Carews and Ichiros and Gwynns even though baseball doesn't seem to like those kind of players any more. Someone has to get on base before the boppers bat and force the defense into making errors . Just look at Cincy last night making some key errors and look how the Sox manage to lose so much because of defense.

Some key misplays have been big parts of Word Series wins, Buckners error , Graffanino's against the Sox in the playoffs.

I love the thought of a lineup with Madrigal in the leadoff spot.  He is such a different hitter than anything we have and is exactly what we needed.

Dustin Pedroia is probably 5'7"--180 and he has added some pop as well as hits for average.
