I've been thinking that his ABs have been much more competitive against LHP as of late, even when he hasn't gotten the results.

Following up on this, I managed to get Baseball Savant to give me month by month splits for Yoan as RHH...

April: .268 wOBA

May: .110 wOBA

June: .150 wOBA

July: .334 wOBA (not including today)

He doesn't have close to his best stuff and he's being incredibly efficient.

He's really in an odd spot as far as where he fits into the next contention window. Realistically they aren't competing next year. Possibly 2020? At that point you have 2 years of Carlos control left. Do you try to win with him? Or do you try to flip him at some point for a return that will bolster the younger core? I'm of the opinion you turn him into prospects since I'm not convinced contention is happening anytime soon.

This is where the uncertainty with the Eaton trade trio really hurts.

Yup. And I'm not sure when Carlos would maximize a return either. Off-season if he finishes strong? Trade deadline next year? Do you bank on him becoming injury free?

I think 368 days from now most likely, but like you said, it's always a question mark with his health.

I don’t think it changes the equation though.  I truly believe we’d be better off  cashing in on Rodon’s value (if it’s there) and use those prospects to acquire a TOR when our window is opening.  I just hate the idea of finally putting together a competitive team only to lose Rodon after a year or two.

Yea. I kinda feel you need to follow the Rays model.  When a guy is getting close to free agency, you need to cash in that chip to reload. And theoretically you already have a capable replacement ready for him in the system that isn't too far off.

The Rodon situation is much more interesting to me than the Avi one. I don't think any prospect we get matches his upside but I understand the circumstances. I'd personally keep him, but it's tough.

Avi is much more likely, IMO, to ever agree to a fair extension if the Sox approached him.

Exactly.  If we can get a quality return for Rodon between now and this coming offseason (again a big if), that opens up a spot for us to sign a veteran starter to fill a spot.  The rotation would then be veteran, Kopech, Lopez, Giolito, & Stephens or Covey.  I’d give Lopez & Giolito half a season to show what they got and have Cease & Dunning waiting in the wings to fill in as needed.  After the 2019 season we can then use the prospect depth we created from a Rodon to add the rotation if necessary.  I really feel like that’s the best path forward rotation wise.

It's disheartening that Timmy hasn't walked this month. His approach to start the year was so encouraging.

Makes me question what Steverson is actually doing with these guys.  Timmy was actually being selective for a while and has mostly given that up over the last month or so.  Like show him some tape/stats and say “hey look how selective you were being here and how it paid off”.  It’s just so weird to see a guy take a massive leap forward in their biggest area and then completely abandon the change upon success.
