Christ, the Mets are still paying Jose Reyes and he isn't even good. Character matters for nothing at this level of professional sports, and it never will until the fans say differently. A guy with as much clout as Verlander should be able to voice an opinion dissenting from the moves of ownership, but who knows how things work in Houston. It was obvious they were going to get rid of him right after the suspension was lifted. They likely care more about DV than the average US city.
