Sleepy Harold
Hot Stove is here I guess, thanks ATL. Edited November 26, 2018 by Sleepy Harold
almagest
Wouldn't mind a 2 year deal with him but Atlanta makes sense for him since they're a playoff team. This probably takes them out of Machado. Harper still an option for them?

Bob Sacamano
That's about what I expected. A one year deal to rebuild value. And their payroll is low enough to throw a high salary out there. Edited November 26, 2018 by soxfan2014
Colinski
Interesting that’ he’s not waiting to see what the Machado price is/waiting for the runners up on in the Machado stakes to come calling. Maybe he sees Machado as a SS and therefore he defines the 3b market. I’m guessing he doesn’t want to get stuck holding the baby like moose did. For Atlanta’s perspectIve this is perfect. Austin Riley needs a little more time in AAA.

Colinski
My only issue with this deal is that we didn’t do it. Even with his injuries Donaldson’s OBP was over .350. His floor is better than what we have at almost any position if our players hit there ceiling.
ChiSox59
Can Donaldson even reliably play 3B any longer? Didn't he have shoulder issues and then the yips after?
ChiSoxFanMike
Donaldson would have been a perfect short term solution at 3rd base for the Sox. Sigh.

You'd have to be a fool to rather have Yolmer play 3rd base than Donaldson, even if it was only for a year.

glangon
I'm glad we are out on this one. What a massive overpay for Donaldson.
whitesoxbrad
I hope I am wrong but I just do not think anyone who has any kind of name wants to come to our whitesox, I wait day after day for something positive to happen, gosh i hope I am wrong.

I swear that 1 tweet by Morosi has made people forget about just how far this team was from actually contending last year and just how many holes they have.

All I'm saying is that Donaldson would have made the lineup significantly better next year and the Sox would have had a somewhat interesting trade deadline piece if they were out of the race by midseason. A lot of money to pay for a “possible” trade chip with massive health issues of late.

That's interesting in this day and age of flipping players, you keep Donaldson til June and see if you are contending for the title in our pathetic division. If not, flip city. Although I personally am not a fan of flipping/tanking, you get the drift.
Eminor3rd
23 mil to play for a contender. What would it have cost to play for us? 25? 28? It is really naive to assume that JR spending TWENTY FIVE MILLION dollars on a one year player in 2019 wouldn’t affect his appetite to spend money on long term pieces in the future. Budget money doesn’t just appear and disappear magically each year. Yes, it would have made sense for us if the price was reasonable, but a contender was always going to be motivated to outspend a rebuilder to get JD on a one year deal. Jose Abreu
Should’ve known people would be upset by this... there isn’t much reason for us to spend 23 million or more for one year of a 1B/DH unless we really do land one of Machado/Harper
southsider2k5
Unless Bryce Harper was our first signing, there was no really good reason to go after Donaldson. Why so we could win 78 instead of 73 games next year? Meh. Pass.
