Reading up on the trade, very interesting to see how Mariners fans think they fleeced us while the Fangraphs community generally feels we won the trade.

Think rose-tinted glasses. Now, moving on to closer,  Kimbrel wants a 6 year deal ...................................

I'm sure those Mariners fans have never had the pleasure of watching Omar try to catch a pitch below the knees.

Yup, given all our young pitching, I’m very glad Hahn is placing some priority on defense at the catcher’s spot.  After that recent Athletic article, I honestly thought we were going to keep Omar.

Feed the media what you want the masses to be deceived by while you do your “real work” behind the curtain. ?

Am I crazy or was Kevan Smith the Sox best pitch-caller?  It seems like the rotation collapse coincided with Castillo’s return and that they pitched MUCH better when he was suspended.

There’s definitely some truth to that and I consider it a big positive for Hahn.

Remember kids, the actualization of creativity coincides with the removal of doubt.

Go along now and have a wonderful day!

It's an odd trade for the Mariners.  Ostensibly they are rebuilding.  They don't need to bring in a catcher if they are selling off relievers and anything else not bolted down.  They ditched Zunino earlier this offseason so they had a "hole" at catcher, but I mean that's a feature not a bug in a tank.

They still need someone to play the position Navarez is cheap and has four years of control. Colome is expensive and has two. I would have preferred prospects for Navarez but we'll have to wait and see how this works out.

One thing people aren't even really considering is the volatility of relievers. Colome may not be good and us left with nothing the Rays traded him in the mist of a down stretch and got nothing.

I'm on record as not thinking the Sox needed to add a ton to the bullpen. I want to find out which of these young options will be here when the games matter. They disagree obviously. With that being said, this is a great trade. Alex Colome is really good. Narvaez hit well last year but all of his value as a hitter is dragged down by his negative value behind the plate. Narvaez wasn't going to be here when it matters so selling high makes sense. Colome also serves two masters in that he could be here to be on a better club the next couple of seasons but could also be flipped if necessary for something much more useful to the long-term future of the White Sox than Omar Narvaez was.

This sets up for another veteran addition at catcher in my opinion with Zavala given the chance to compete with that guy for the backup job. I think it's definitely Collins/Zavala in 2020 though.

Also, this bullpen (likely with another addition according to Hahn) could be pretty good. Colome, Jones, Hamilton, Minaya, Burr etc on the right side with Fry, Frare and Bummer on the left side with Burdi in the wings and guys like Johnson, Medeiros, Schryver not terribly far away. Good trade by the front office in my opinion.

Hahn said that they are not finished adding to the bullpen, and I would assume that free agency is probably the way they will go to get that next guy? Who do you think is a likely target? Jeurys Familia maybe?

I’d rather go with a bounce-back guy like Cody Allen if possible.  We have a ton of young arms that will be pushing for jobs over the next two seasons and I’d rather not go three years for big money on a reliever.

  • CL: Allen
  • SU: Colome
  • SU: Fry
  • MR: Jones
  • MR: Bummer/Frare
  • MR: Hamilton
  • LR: Covey/Banuelos

That would be a really solid bullpen. I do agree that they should try to beef up the relief pitching as much as possible to take some pressure off of a young starting rotation.

Any interest  in  Joe Kelly?  He seemed  pretty solid  and yet I hear nothing of his name  being mentioned  anywhere with any team. Not sure how he would fit  with us.

He's one guy I wanted us to target in the offseason. I'd actually put him into the rotation.

The last time he was in the rotation for a full season was 2015 and he's never made more than 25 starts in a season, and it's not like he was an incredible starter - I would stick with the bullpen on this one.

He already said that they’re going outside the organization.

Oh, I'm aware.

I just didn't think it was wise to create a gap in the catcher depth chart where none needed to be created. Don't get me wrong:

Losing Smith was not a big deal, and selling high on Narvaez seems to be a good idea. On an individual basis, neither move will sink this rebuild, nor lift it to glory. But, losing crucial depth that can give Zavala/Collins the time to learn what they need to learn is my concern. Given that neither Zavala nor Collins are even AAAA-caliber [YET], I just hope they have a reasonable solution that gives them the time they need.

Given that this is the White Sox, I'm fully expecting Zavala to be here sooner than he should be.

Personally I was surprised that they brought in the steroid abuser last offseason rather than rushing one of the guys to the big leagues, but given what we saw last year, they've already brought in a catcher to make sure those guys have the time they need, so I would be surprised and disappointed if they did not do so again. Backup catchers are available cheaply, and they should absolutely go get one.

Hard to be a left handed specialist when you're right handed.

I was referring to the stats vs. left handed hitters (mentioned in this thread):

Can you let me know if this is legit?

Alex Colome (RHP) vs LHH last season.

119 hitters, 47 Ks, 8 BBs, 2 Barrels allowed.

Narvaez was under control through 2022...

He won't cost much why not stretch him out? He has starter stuff. Boston really didn't show much patience. I season of 4.08 xFIP isn't disqualifying to me.

He could take over as our 5th starter probably won't cost much. Worth a shot as far as I'm concerned. I'd much rather bring in a guy like Kelly then some soft tosser who is going out there throwing garbage every night hoping someone chases.
