Philly fans whine and complain all the time though, this wouldn’t be any different, hell even when they do sign him there will be fans out there complaining about him and/or saying they didn’t do enough this offseason...At the end of the day they’ve added mccutcheon, segura, and realmuto which has drastically improved their team.

They also are rumored to be looking into Kimbrel on a short/er term deal...

Lozano supposedly asked for final numbers prior to New Years’ Day. How many times might he have done this?

This thing was almost done many times, only to then suddenly stop.

With the benefit of hindsight, the time Lozano honestly was closing it out was the time it is easy to criticize the Sox for not biting.

You have no idea how many other times they didn’t bite and nothing happened.

It is an odd comparison,  but it reminds me of an ISIS execution. For a long period of time they bring the prisoner out and enact their execution on a regular basis. Over and over they go through the steps only to stop right before it happens.  Eventually the prisoner gets used to it and doesn't panic or breakdown when it is done, thinking that it is just another fake. Then one day when they don't expect it, it happens.  Putting together the reports with how the White Sox reacted to the actual last offer, the Sox really didn't believe that this was the end... except it was.

It's conceivable, play him elsewhere, if we made the decision as an organization, above average defense at other positions, etc.

Nothing said about playing third base. We know that it was a possibility because of NM coming up. The point is, it wasn't set in stone third base until the day before Manny signed. Looks to me like they were holding off moving him to third until Manny signed.

The entire off season was spent talking about Moncada playing 3B.

I never said it wasn't. Talk is different than happened. There was talk about signing a premium free agent. There was talk about not signing stop gaps. There was no definitive Moncada to third talk from the team. In the posted Hahn interview he never mentioned a position or used anything close to assurances.

Where do you think that talk came from?

All along, the organization said it mattered what happened this offseason with regards to where Yoan played. It didn’t take a genius to realize he would be at 3rd if they didn’t get Manny.  Once Moustakas signed and Yoan practiced at 3rd, it seemed over to me.

Marwin Gonzalez was the final domino to fall...

I don’t think Moose was ever in the cards for us, it was Machado or bust in terms of 3B options.

When Moose didnt sign with SD. He was rumored to be a priority there. When he went back to the Brewers, that said a lot. Then Moncada moved to third.

Gotcha, misinterpreted what you guys were getting at.

Seems like the Harper derby will end this week.  Assuming Bryce signs with someone else, I hope Hahn never again uses the terms “unprecedented financial flexibility” or “economic might” while pretending we’re actually going to pursue impact talent.  Just be honest and tell us you plan on adding a boatload of past-their prime B tier free agents and that we can all expect to relive the glory that was the 2014/15 offseason.

Philly about to feel what it's like to be a Sox fan right now.

We should just offer to take Pollock and/or Pederson off their hands to make this happen...would MUCH rather help the Dodgers than the Cubs on the salary relief front.

That's why signing Manny was so important for the Sox. They'll never beat the big dogs to a signing.

Yup, pretty sad our front office blew it and that we’ll never have a six WAR player unless we develop our own.  The rebuild’s best-case outcome is now reduced as a result of these misses.

Without that one superstar, we’re the 2008 White Sox heading into Tampa without Quentin...and the once again disillusioned fans simply aren’t going to buy into a weak AL Central division championship leading to any type of playoff success (see Indians’ fans current mood despite four titles in a row).  Heck, at the moment .500 baseball isn’t even assured in 2020, let alone a playoff run.

And what's worse, is that when it comes to developing a 6+WAR player the only position player in the org capable of that is Moncada. Eloy is going to top out in the 3-4 WAR range because of his defensive limitations. Moncada is the key to this rebuild, IMO. He has to be a star otherwise it won't work at all. Even if Moncada is a 4 WAR player, it isn't good enough. The bad news is that the success or failure is all on his shoulders, and that is a lot of weight for him to bear.

Robert could get there, too, if he can hit 20-25 homers...he definitely has the frame and leverage to do it if Alexei could pull it off at about 165-170 pounds.

Adolfo would be my third choice...his defense will be a bit limited due to speed, but he could put together a huge season of outfield assists like Avi and Eaton have recorded in recent years.

Basabe, Rutherford and Gonzalez would be tied for 4th, although they seem like 1.5-2.5 guys at the current moment.  One could break out in unexpected fashion, although I certainly wouldn’t bet a Greg house on it.

Let’s not forget we likely get two more shots with high first round picks...one pitcher (to replace Rodon) and one position player in all likelihood.
