Yep. With the low salary overhead the next few years, Sox could have matched the Phillies dollars and years and front-loaded the contract. $25M this year $40M the next two would leave them an average of $20M the next ten years. When "the core" is ready to re-up, Haprer's contract wouldn't have hindered the team from making financial commitments in the future.

I can't  get over how dumb they are.

After all that squirming Harp takes a low AAV for the long years.

And I will guarantee at some point this offseason KW or Hahn said (or at the very minimum thought) “lol...I’m not paying $300M for Harper when we have all these great OF prospects”.  IMO, the Harper chase was simply a front to put some pressure on Machado, which is a shame since we’re seeing how Bryce’s drawing power could have greatly benefited the organization.  Absolutely mind-boggling we never made an offer.

Debut with the Phillies on MLB network. Sox don't need that kind of attention.

Shit, we already have two beat writers as it is.  Wouldn’t want the clubhouse to be overflowing with media types after each game, that could really distract the team and limit our chances of winning the division next year.

Especially given the whole buzz around Jim Thome being dispatched to Vegas to talk to him.  What was that all about then?  Were the Sox only in this If in some very unlikely event Harper could be had at a substantially below market price?

Probably yeah, along with the added benefit of potential leverage with Machado.  I don’t believe the Sox were ever serious about Bryce.

The White Sox clearly thought they had a legitimate shot at Harper at a value WAY under his actual market price, that's why they put together such a "great presentation" or whatever Kenny described it as. When they actually started money, Boras simply said come back when you have a respectable offer or something along those lines, the White Sox then never did.

Operative word: Boras.

To think Scott Boras of all agents, with his record, would deliver a contract to a client like Harper, a generational talent no less, for a “value WAY under his actual market price” is delusional thinking at its finest.  Zero chance of that happening!  Makes you wonder what other owners and front office management teams think of the Sox brass after all of this.

This all is still depressing. Going to be ridiculously hard to win a World Series if these guys are too cheap to pay for premium free agents.  Even if many of the prospects pan out (which they havent done so far).

No joke.  It is difficult when you have a competent front office and an owner that wants to win, and will spend 200 million to be competitive.

It's been difficult seeing and reading about how Machado and Harper  were received at their spring training camps and their first at bats. The adulation from the fans. To wish that could have been us, if only we had a real front office and ownership group.

Don't want to re-open old wounds but Heyman was on the Score this morning and said the Sox got aggressive in their Harper pursuit after Machado signed and said they offered more money than they did Manny. They probably lost out on the years.

Tired of the word games. An aggressive offer is one in which they had put together an offer that was greater than other teams. They didn't put together an aggressive offer. They put together a conservative one.

I was about to complain about whoever reopened this thread of pain but this is actually useful info, thanks. Confirms my suspicions as well. We probably offered him something like 10/280
