Jerry’s ability as a businessman is a detriment to putting the best team on the field. His business savvy is not conducive to the fan experience or the player of this generation. He’s a dinosaur.

and, I don't understand why it needs to be repeated, but baseball isn't a traditional business and all the owners are billionaires.

Starting out this offseason if you would have told me the Sox would end up spending roughly the same money on Yonder Alonso, Jon Jay, Ivan Nova, and Jame McCann in 2019 as Bryce Harper, but end up not getting either of the two whales, I would have kicked you in the groin so hard.

This deal reaks of boras. 330 mil with no opt outs and no trades, 330 million guaranteed, and Harper gets his money regardless. Meanwhile the Phillies will be stuck with an aging player once he's past his prime, even if the aav is pretty low for an all star.

Dude I'd wager you it would be easy to unload that deal when they get to that bridge.

If Prince Fielder showed us anything, it's that there is no deal that is unloadable.

We don't know the structure of the deal. It could be a front loaded deal with the last 3 years paying him like $5 mil each, which would still achieve the same luxury tax effect.  Basically whatever Harper gives them from age 37-39 is gravy.

That makes no difference is what I'm saying (other than the money you pay now being worth more than paying the same amount later). You're basically buying out all of his productive years for a lump sum and you're assuming his productive years stop sometime well before year 13. So talking about the average cost per year is pretty misleading in terms of how much he's being valued at.

and the phillies get a rare elite asset to provide value to their baseball team during what looks like a competitive run. Seems fair to me.

people only care about it because of the luxury tax implications which will matter for a team like the phillies that invests in its ball club. Would have mattered less for white sox who are unlikely to ever operate at that level.

The Phillies know that the money they're paying at the end doesn't matter any more than the deferred money the White Sox are still paying Konerko. If Harper is even moderately productive at the end of the deal that's an extra win. Spreading it out over 13 years keeps them under the luxury tax in 2020 if they sign anyone else, and they're paying him to be the equivalent of an all star for the next 5-6 years. Anything he does over that last 7 is gravy.

Yes he won't be the same at age 26 as he will be at 39, but at an avg of $25m a year, you could he saving up front and just consider his later years as "deferred" even though his contract may not have a true deferral in it. I think both sides won in this.

Harper was never going to commit 13 years to the Sox given their payroll limits, rebuild and likely ownership change during that period.

I feel very confident that if sox offered him 10 for 340 he would have signed it despite these limitations.

Harper took this deal because it was the only one offered that beat Stanton's deal. This isn't a coincidence - Boras will say whatever he wants to say about how Harper wanted to be there for his career now that the deal is signed, but you know darn well that 330/10 with an opt out after 5 from the White Sox is a deal he takes.

You're right, I agreed to a 7 day ban bet and lost. Have your way with me Mods.

So you won the bet then? I’m confused because being banned after this off season is not necessarily bad.

Jerry writes the checks. He needs to sell the team to a owner that will actually pay for free agents

And Rick drafts (bad to mediocre), signs FAs (terrible history), makes trades (hello Tatis and others), and more. What kind of delusional world is someone in thinking he’s done a good job?! Even his trading of a future hall of fame pitcher may end up being a disaster. Eventually he needs to take responsibility.

I really have never been anti-Jerry until Machado was lost, but looking at his franchises, it's really time for him to move on. Money is important to him. I don't blame him, it's important to me.  He doen's have the heart to fire anyone, even though they would be long gone with any successful franchise. But he can have all the money he will ever need or want to pass down if he realizes his way doesn't work anymore.  Take some pride in his almost 40 years of ownership with the Sox and Bulls, sell the teams, and take the money and run. Chicago deserves better.

But they won't have any albatrosses on their payroll during Jerry's age 90-93 years.

Shoot - Based on the way inflation works and the probably larger % of the financial pie the players who’ll be lobbying for in the coming decades, the PHILLIES might not even have that albatross. $25m could very well be what a 2 WAR player makes in... 2090 or whenever the hell that contract ends

Yeah, he wasn't the worst owner. But I'm tired of having an owner more invested in the health of the league than the health of the franchise. Like, dude, the revenues are 10 billion, stop forcing your franchise to be the martyr just so you can bend the cba to you year after year.

For sure. And any idiot could have figured that out weeks ago.
