Let me say this: Don't interpret the length and dollars until you know the opt-outs. 10/300 with no opt-outs and 10/300 with an opt-out after year 2 would be very different contracts.

Yeah that nats offer had zero opt outs iirc

How do we know? It might not even be Hahn, obviously Reinsdorf has his limits.

Just think of it this way- does anyone really believe that the Sox would have had multiple meetings with Harper, laying a lot of groundwork, etc. just to sit back and not make an offer on him as the bidding is reaching its final stages?

No, but obviously they have their limits too. Just a matter of where this thing ends up at.

I wouldn't think so, but for all we know they may have put in all that groundwork at a time when they felt Manny to the Yankees was a strong possibility.  As soon as they knew the Yankees were out, they may have backed off discussions with Harper and put all their focus on getting Manny.

Just throwing this out there for fun:

Phillies payroll now is at 125,000,000 and in the multi-year summary hovers around the 90,000,000 mark.

The white sox payroll is 80,000,000 now and then goes to 25,000,000 for the next two years and then 10,000,000 for the following two.

Doesn't mean anything much, but f***ing hell, we have money to play with. So much money that we could sign both Harper and Machado, have contract extensions for Yoan and Eloy set up, AND sign other free agents.

Because they knew at the start of FA what the offer that was turned down was.  They knew what it would cost to get him the moment they decided to go for him.  Trust me, they didn't meet with him and stay in this to not be prepared to go more than 10 million over the original starting point.   You don't do the presentation they did and send out Thome, etc, to not be in this to win it.  310 isn't what he's signing for, to play in Philly of all places.

The first reply to his tweet made me irrationally angry. To take vulnerable people for a ride just for your personal entertainment is just trash-tier human behaviour.

How do so many people genuinely unironically still buy that account.
