Fernando Tatis Jr. thread

I’ve jinxed him by losing him for the first time in three years to a rival ten team rotisserie league owner who picked hum first overall.

I did pick up Wander Franco, Mackenzie Gore and Vaughn on waivers.

At least have Giolito and Robert.

I know, I know...nobody cares about travel pictures or someone else’s rotisserie league or baseball card collection, lol.

People were surprised I didn't take Tatis  (took Mike Trout) in the Sox Talk league last night. Time will tell if that was the right move, but I think Trout will be a solid 1st round retention pick for at least a few more years, and produces at a higher rate now (OPS, HR, R, RBI, SB).

  • 2 weeks later...

Tatis and Machado were total garbage yesterday...Padres managed to pull out the win after blowing a 6-1 lead and going down 7-6.

Perhaps the MVP of the game was Jake Cronenworth, the type of valuable super utility guy the Rays never part with (afterthought the day of the Pham deal.)

Kershaw was even worse, along with the Bellinger/Turner mixup on the basepaths.

Jealous of the teams with depth. You would think after years of sucking, they could have developed some bench options other than Engel.

That's why you sign the extension as quickly as you can.

At first, it looked like the elbow, but then all the focus is on the shoulder right now.

Snake bitten.   This would be his third major injury.

So basically you've got a range of predictions from 6-12 weeks all the way to surgery and out for the season, with Kim likely taking over.

PTAC, here's your chance to analyze for all of those fantasy/roto league players, or just fans of baseball in general.

"Dr. David Chao, an orthopedic surgeon who correctly identified the injury hours before the Padres announced a shoulder subluxation, said Tatis will likely require arthroscopic surgery for a labral tear. Chao, who served as the Chargers team doctor for almost 20 years, said it is possible Tatis could continue to play and put off surgery if the tear was not made worse Monday. Surgery would end his season, as it generally requires a six-month recovery."

This would be a first where a doctor watching from afar predicts the outcome so quickly.

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/padres/story/2021-03-24/padres-fernando-tatis-shoulder-injury-practice

“Tatis has dealt with the balky shoulder since he was in the minor leagues and twice this spring sat out for a period after hurting the shoulder. Sources have described what happens as the shoulder popping out and then back in when Tatis does certain movements. Chao said the reoccurrence of the injury in such a short period indicates it is becoming easier to dislocate and portends ongoing issues even if Tatis continues to play.”

....

“Right now he’s feeling better from, obviously, he was in quite a bit of pain coming out of the game,” Tingler said after the game. “I don’t have a lot of information except the fact they’re going to do more tests and evaluation tomorrow and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Apparently he’s had shoulder problems (popping in and out of joint) ever since he was in Rookie ball.  Would be interesting to find out how long Preller or even Hahn knew about it.

He had a similar problem nearing the end of spring training and played through it after PT.  Obviously if they were hugely concerned they wouldn’t have offered him $340 million.

Wonder what he actually could have done if he was “playing hurt” all this time?  I have a feeling he’s going to try to come back at least once or twice...before undergoing surgery that has been long-delayed.

They might have Lamet go under the knife as well.  Which would mean they hold back Gore at least until they ensure the extra year of control, with Clevinger also out for the year due to TJ.

Fwiw, Michael Conforto suffered a similar injury in 2017.  That particular injury included a tear in the posterior capsule, complicating the situation.

And the surgery is not an easy one which would included an expected recovery and rehabilitation time of four to six months. That means there would be a chance that Conforto would not be ready for spring training. The surgery depends on the extent of the tear and the quality of the tissue remaining. The recovery and rehabilitation is a tedious process that involves immobilization then slowly stretching the capsule after it heals and then strengthening the shoulder.

"It's about four to six months before an athlete is back to playing professionally," Tehrany said.

A shoulder that has been previously dislocated and without surgery is more likely to suffer another dislocation, Dr. Tehrany confirmed. Conforto is believed to have dislocated the shoulder before, but there was nothing that could have been done to prevent it.”

He (Conforto) came back the following season and lost 142 points off his OPS, but was pretty much back to 100% by 2019.  But the situations (swinging violently and missing a pitch) were almost identical.

So he’s (Tatis) had the broken left thumb/ligament damage in 2018, a back issue wiping out the end of his 2019 season and now this...starting to sound like Tiger Woods but ten years earlier in his professional career,

Wait Tatis is driving his car off the road after getting caught cheating on his wife!?!

No, all the knee, hip and back problems related to the terrific torque from his swing, trying to evade tags, diving on the ground and in the air...Conforto has a similarly aggressive approach.   Almost violent.  Corkscrew effect.

I should probably contact all the SD Perkins Restaurants but they’re likely all out of business, wiped out by IHop, Dennys or Waffle House.

“Tatis was feeling better after it was put back in the socket and will undergo an MRI today to see the extent of the damage.

Dr. David Chao, an orthopedic surgeon who was the Chargers’ doctor for nearly 20 years and who I have worked with extensively, correctly identified the injury almost immediately after it happened and also believes Tatis has a labral tear that will eventually require arthroscopic surgery. Chao talks about it in this video.

I’ve worked closely with Chao. He doesn’t speak on an injury unless he is virtually certain.

Even if Tatis is able to put off surgery, this could be an ongoing issue until he does get it fixed. When a shoulder injury like this recurs frequently that means it is getting easier for it to dislocate. Remember, it was just two weeks ago that Tatis left a spring training game after reaching across his body to backhand a ground ball.

If he does get surgery, it will end his season.”

Looks like he will be moved to CF next year...and, just like the White Sox with Vaughn, could be seeing Abrams one year early if Profar and Kim can’t handle SS.

Also, in this way, they don’t have to rush Gore, Lamet or Clevinger.  They’ll try for the wild card, but won’t mortgage the future to win this year.

That's not including Profar (who had his own arm/shoulder injury in the past) and CJ Abrams, who's still seen as ideally suited for the middle infield or CF depending on what happens with Tatis, Jr.

That's a lot of depth/roster flexibility.

Theory posited that Tatis will miss most of the season and that Preller is just buying time to get a new SS.

Not sure that makes much sense with how much depth they already have at that particular position.

Knowing Preller's history with injuries, though...

Rival MLB exec: "Huh, I wonder why Preller is calling me about a SS? Surely Tatis isn't sitting out the season."

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Tatis acquisition does more long term harm than good to the Padres organization? Meaning they just handed this dude $340M and he becomes a major financial burden moving forward because he can’t stay on the field? Can’t say I’d feel sorry for them either.

But it wouldn’t be good for the sport.  It’s almost like Patrick Mahomes being similarly hurt.  Not quite at that level, of course, but he has been the most highly marketed MLB player throughout the offseason.  Trout and Betts are better, Acuna and Soto right there with him, Bellinger, etc.  Baseball will continue to struggle to attract young fans without guys like Tatis and TA playing at the top of their game.

The fact that it’s the leader shoulder for hitting isn’t nearly as consequential as if it were his throwing arm.  Then we’d possibly be talking about a positional change...and they might still end up sticking him in the OF.

No offense, but the Tatis comparison to Mahomes is terrible. There are many casual baseball fans that don’t even know who Tatis is, especially if they follow an AL team. Every football fan knows Mahomes and many non-football fans have heard of him too.
