I think a guy trying to throw a ball 110 mph in the offseaon ultimately requiring tj surgery shouldn't be shocking to anyone.

Maybe why Dombrowski made him available.

He was a TJS candidate in waiting.

One possibility is that it is just way, way tougher to project pitching than we think...and as a consequence, trying to base a rebuild on acquiring pitching prospects is a terrible idea. Basing the rebuild on a huge load of pitching prospects is to the letter what Rick Hahn did. It could be that basic - pitching prospects look nice, but acquiring a bunch of them could remain a path that doesn't work.

The Padres are rebuilding via pitching; so did the Braves. I don't see how that's the problem, nor do I see that as what Hahn really did.  He took pitching, but not an inordinate amount.  Of course he's basically ignored the international market except for a few select players....that helps bulk up on prospects.

The problem isn't philosophy...it's that he and the people who work for him are poor evaluators and developers of talent.  A lot of teams were staying away from Fulmer - that was Sale arrogance and in the end, they couldn't/didn't develop him (and they had taken Danish, another delivery problem, just a year or so earlier with a high pick).  And for further proof of he and his staff's talent evaluation skills, look at the veterans he's signed...it's horrific.  Heck 3 retired mid-contract.  If you can't find veterans who are at least capable, how are you going to evaluate prospects.

Who are you going to spend the money on? Next year's free agent class is lacking.

Go hard after Gerrit Cole, JD Martinez, and Nick Castellenos.

Trade prospects for a guy like Grienke.

That‘s okay. According to Soxtalk‘s resident doctors, Chris Sale was a tommy john surgery waiting to happen when he was drafted and his arm falls off when he throws more than 85 pitches. ?
