doubleM23
DISCLAIMER: I am in no way a music expert. On a good day, I have about 5 brain cells functioning correctly. However, I release this list every year, first, because I like to relook at the year, and secondly, because I love music, and I love talkin' music... That said, read; and discuss amongs yourselves... CLOSE CALLS (In no particular order, of course): Foo Fights - All My Life --- Saliva - Always --- Sugarcult - Bouncing off the Walls --- Mr. Cheeks - Lights, Camera, Action --- Millencolin - Man or Mouse --- Chad Kroger & Friends - Hero --- Fat Joe f/ R. Kelly - We Thuggin' --- KoRn - Here To Stay --- Avril Lavigne - Complicated --- Our Lady Peace - Somewhere Out There >23audiovent - THE ENERGY >>> Such a good song... The CD is a tad weak after the first track (this song), but that does not take away from the utter greatness of this musical masterpiece... OK, so I exagerated a tad. >22311 - AMBER >>> 311 gets no love, I swear. Maybe its the whole supposed KKK connection, but they have made some damn fine music in the past. Amber's druggy melody and slow, but steady rhythm makes it the Underplayed Song od 2002. >21the donnas - TAKE IT OFF >>> With a little fine tuning of their sound and more kick ass songs like this one, could The Donnas become the new queens of rock? >20transplants - DIAMONDS AND GUNS >>> Unfortunately, this song came out late in the year, making it hard to accurately scale against others. Very easily, had Diamonds and Guns come out just a little earlier, this could have cracked the Top 10... The Transplants have one of the freshest sounds out there now. Highly recommended. >19puddle of mudd - DRIFT AND DIE >>> Following up on their 2001 success, Puddle of Mudd is quickly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with. However, before I annoint them new rock gods, they're going to have to release another album. Oh, "Drift and Die..." How can you not love it? >18linkin park - MY DECEMBER (REMIX) >>> While not nearly as good as the original, the remix of "My December" highlights another solid year for Linkin Park. While not as sucessful as 2001 (which saw them get top honors on my list), LP does have some staying power. >17eminem - LOSE YOURSELF>>> The artist of the year! After his smash album, "The Eminem Show," Slim didn't dissapoint with his cut off the "8 Mile Soundtrack." While not as edgy as his best work, the intoxicating beat and lyrical genius of Marshall Mathers is dazzlingly displayed. >16good charlotte - THE DAY THAT I DIE >>> Yeah, that other one's been all over the airwaves (and no, its not on the list), but yes, I do listen to some CDs and find better B-sides (so to speak). Good Charlotte's new album is a winner, and no song is better, more emotionally charged, and more full of heart and soul than "The Day that I Die." Its morbid, yet beautiful, message combined with a sweet harmony and perfect vocals make it a keeper. The acoustic version is even better than the studio cut. >15jimmy eat world - BLEED AMERICAN >>> Arguably, outside of Eminem, no one had a bigger 2002 than Jimmy Eat World. Their album was a smash and they pumped out hot single after single. Many got old, however, but "Bleed American" was clearly a cut above the rest. >14ludicras - MOVE b****>>> OK, when a song is played at EVERY, SINGLE party I've been to in months, that's definitely a sign from God to include it on my list. While I still wonder how talented Ludicras is, he scored big this year with Move b**** and Rollout (to name a few). Whether or not he has staying power remains to be seen. >13santana f/ michelle branch - GAME OF LOVE >>> Take 1 part Carlos Santana on the axe, add 1 part Michelle Branch's heavenly voice, and add another part a pretty good song and you have the recipe for a Top 23 slot. >12*nsync f/ nelly - GIRLFRIEND (REMIX) >>> Before coupled with Nelly, "Girlfriend" was just another fruity *NSync love song (and those come at a dime a dozen), but throw in a little rap and Nelly's sometimes screechy voice and you all of a sudden have a winning combination. The contrast of Justin Timberlake's solos to Nelly's gives this song a catch sound not duplicated, and it is one of the sweetest love songs I've heard in a while. >11tenacious d - TRIBUTE >>> No one but Jack Black could propel this song to #11. It never got old and to this day is still utterly hilarious. >10trust company - FIGURE EIGHT >>> While their smash it, "Downfall" is an awesome song, I couldn't justify giving the boys from 'Bama two slots on the countdown, and after listening to their first CD, "The Lonely Position of Neutral," it was clear that their song of the year was Figure Eight. >NINEpuddle of mudd - SHE HATES ME >>> Love songs will always have their place, but every now and then you just need to scream, "SHE ****ING HATES ME!" Wes Scantlin has a real rocker's voice, the band has a real rocker's sound... They may be on their way to superstardom (and I hear they kick ass live, too). >EIGHTeminem - BUSINESS >>> Yeah, you knew he wasn't done. Coupled with mentor, Dr. Dre, Business is the best example of Eminem's unreal lyrical abilities. While Business may be only good on the content aspect, its the rhythm and flow of the song that sets it apart from the best. Anyone who listens to Business and still claims rap is easy and takes no talent isn't listening hard enough. You can't do what Eminem can. >SEVENred hot chilli peppers - THE ZEPHYR SONG >>> A decade or so ago, everyone thought the Peppers were the next best thing to happen to rock, but starting with Californication and now with their newest release, By the Way, it is clear that the once hard rockers have matured a tad and have consequently changed their sound. The Zephyr Song's dreamy/druggy sound and slow tempo is so not what we expected, it's great. >SIXsystem of a down - AERIALS >>> "Aerials... In the sky..." They're not Rage Against the Machine, but the often-time lefist messages in System's songs are probably what appeals me. Oh, that, and they're also very good. >FIVEaudioslave - COCHISE >>> Any song that can shake my car while stopped belongs in the Top 5. ****ing A. >FOURthe hives - HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO >>> They don't speak good English, but they play good music. With the old, Rolling Stone look on the video with a sound reminiscient of good ol' classic rock, The Hives are the coolest thing to come from Scandanavia since the Swedish Bikini Team... Mud wrestling... Without the Bikinis. >THREEeminem - HAILIE'S SONG >>> Has he lost his edge? Maybe, but knowing Slim, he'll find somethign to sing about. His ballad to his daughter, Hailie, hatches a sweeter, caring side from the violent, cold facade he has put on. While I doubt Eminem's career path follows this road, it is good to hear he's finally happy about something. I'm sure the protesters will find something to get their panties tied in a knot over. >TWOnirvana - YOU KNOW YOU'RE ALL RIGHT >>> Nearly 10 years since his suicide, Kurt Cobain remains one of the most influential forces of the current music trends. While this song was supposed to be released last year, it was delayed for legal reasons. That doesn't take away from the classic Nirvana sound it emulates, as well as the sadly ironic lyrics. We now know things weren't so well and that he didn't feel so well. It's one last gift from a genius taken from us too soon... >ONEeminem - WHITE AMERICA >>> Only Eminem could have taken top honors this year. This WAS his year (again). The first track off "The Eminem Show," all you can say is... "Wow." Powerful and controversial lyrics masterfully sung... White America was tehe shining achievement of Eminem's year. So there you go. Here's hoping 2002 was as good for you as it was for me, and here's hoping you all have safe, and happy New Year's, as well as a fun, enjoyable 2003! P.S... Responses welcome... I love talkin' music. cwsox
Any list that has Em at the top and White America in that spot is fine by me - except that in your top 23 you forgot the 8 Mile track itself -- Anyway, time to open the windows and crank up the volumn and scream: America!! We love you! How many people are proud to be citizens of this beautiful country of ours? The stripes and the stars for the rights that men have died for to protect The women and men who have broke their necks for the freedom of speech the United States government has sworn to uphold.. (Yo, I want everybody to listen to the words of this song) .. or so we're told I never woulda dreamed in a million years I'd see so many motherf***in people, who feel like me Who share the same views and the same exact beliefs It's like a f***in ARMY marchin in back of me So many lives I touched, so much anger aimed in no particular direction, just sprays and sprays And straight through your radio waves, it plays and plays 'til it stays stuck in your head, for days and days... cwsox
and by the way, everything almost on Linkin Park's Reanimation deserves mention... I just made my 4th edition of my rap cd and you can't have a rap cd without those two in it, imo.

CubKilla
Originally posted by Cerbaho-WGQuite possible the worst compilation of music I have ever seen. Jeebus, ever listen to anything NON-Mainstream? Mainstream doesn't mean it's bad. Consequently, something not in the mainstream doesn't mean it's good. Let me sound off a little here..... 311-Amber-This song was played continuously by radio markets in the Chicago area (primarily Q101) during the summer and was ranked for a time on nightly request shows. Amber may have been underplayed to you, but not in Chicago. The Donnas-Female Ramones wanna-be's..... and they have a long way to go too. There's a reason why The Donnas haven't broke into the mainstream..... they're not that good. Transplants-Diamonds and Guns-I love it. Looking forward to getting the album one of these days Puddle of Mudd-Saw these guys open for KoRn. They sucked! Radio play overkill and the first band signed by Fred Durst on his record label is enough for me to say :puke to Puddle of Mudd Eminem-No disagreement with you there. Em is, quite possibly, the voice of Generation Y. Good Charlotte-When they start acting like the persons they villified in "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," will they be labeled sell-outs. One hit wonders..... MARK MY WORDS! Jimmy Eat World-Pop/Rock that I don't get. Too much radio play. NSync f/Nelly-Any Top 25 list that contains anything by NSync is highly suspect..... regardless of who the collaboration is with. Tenacious D-Tribute-Further evidence that, once you make it in Hollywood (i.e., Eddie Murphy, JLo, Jamie Lynn Sigler, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, etc.), record companies will produce any bulls*** a movie star wants to record. Jack Black is good at being the misunderstood misfit in movies and should stick to that. Red Hot Chili Peppers-Zephyr Song-Further evidence that, not only have the Chili Peppers matured, but that they remain extremely relevant in the rock/funk genre. Zephyr Song is easily one of the best songs on their new album. System of a Down-"Often-time leftist?" How about all the time? Nirvana-You Know You're Right-Kurt's ode to Courtney? New/old track recently released by the former Mrs. Kurt Cobain reinforces the assertion by many that Kurt and Nirvana we're/are the voice of Generation X. What could have been..... as much so as what could have been with John Lennon.
cwsox
chisoxfn and cubkilla, enjoyed and was informed and enlightened by your musical comments -- note to csf - Ludacris did not exactly knock me out in concert but the acoustics were s*** too, and I haven't listened to Word of Mouf enough times to make up my mind but I appreciate your speaking for him, will give that disc a few more spins --

Chisoxfn
Well Doublem, I'm taking a lot of your songs and putting them on one cd. I think its a pretty good variety mix. Of course, I'm also adding some zuan songs to it.
Cali
Alright the best time of the year!!!! I'll just comment on the songs/band's I've actually heard... 22. 311 Amber- Do love me the 311, got no problem with that song either, it's just a shame the "Amber alert" started to come out right at the same time the song did. Of course the songs about the color, and not the name, but what are you gonna do? 21 The Donna's- I thought I saw them on some special on Green Day's "Dookie", I think it was Ultimate Albums on VH1, I thought that they were all super underground? Whatever, don't care fo the song, saw the video once, the drummers, kinda hot... 19. Puddle of Mudd- f*** PUDDLE OF MUDD, STOP f***ING WHINING! 18. Linkin Park- Man am I sick of them, it's the old catch 22, every single song on their first release was a hit, I mean every song, it's gonna be real hard to top that, though it's not that hard to make s***ty rapcore music... 17 Eminem- Not a rap fan at all, but I do love controversy, so he's alright. The song is Ok I do love the "feet's fail me not" line makes me laugh. Didn't see the movie, I'd see it on DVD, don't know what the big fuss is about though, it doesn't take a lot of acting talent to play YOURSELF in a movie, the same thing happened with Howard Stern in Private Parts, though I did like that movie, so I may like 8 Mile, Now if it was Eminem is Hamlet.... 16 Good Charlotte- Haven't heard this song, but I did hear the "lifestyles of the rich and famous" one, and it's pretty horrible, though they did have KG in the video for that song so that's cool... 14. Ludicras- Don't like rap, but I do know he's in "The Fast and the Furious 2" Didn't see him when I was working there, didn't really see anybody, but, yeah anyway... 11. :metal THE D :metal They are the greatest band in the world!!!!! The best song on the list. That album is f***ing great I've listened to it 800 times and I still laugh every time :metal JB KG :metal 10. Trust Company- Havent heard this song, but I did hear "downfall" HOLY CRAP could the be anymore basic and stale, I swear... 9. Puddle of Mudd- See number 19. This is quite possibly the worst song ever written, it's like a 13 year old wrote it, to piss of his parents because he used the the word "f***" Ohhhhhh!!! Plus I thought they were "Whine Metal" This is like an Emo-Punk song. Didn't know you could suck at two musical styles but.... 8. Eminem- See number 17. I think I may have heard this song once, but I can't really remember... 7. RHCP- This song is OK, definately a far cry from "Under the Bridge" and from any of there funk stuff. It was really sad to hear them try and do the funk thing and fail at it on the first single "By the Way" It sounded like a band trying to be old RHCP, but sucking really bad at it. 6. System- This songs pretty cool, but I swear to god this was released twice as a single. The final assesment of System of a Down as a band: The music they play is not really hard(Musically) and it's not very heavy, but Serj's voice make it sound cool. His voice drives the band. 5. Audioslave- Uhhhhhggghhhh, What the f*** are you doing Chris?!?! I love Chris Cornell, and Soundgarden, but I hated Rage Against(Within) the Machine. ANd this is basically Chris Cornell singing rage, just without the political thing. "Cochise" is you're basic, plain old, repetive, boring ass Tom Morello riff, I'm sure that was a Rage riff that never saw the light, but I does now. So Far from what I've heard Audioslave, is a waste of Chris Cornell's talent, you want to hear some good s***, you put on Soundgarden's "Superunknown" "Down on the Upside" or Chris Cornell's "Euphoria Morning" and if you want a song try "Limo Wreck" by Soundgarden, that is some goooooooood s***. You know what shakes my car, when it's stopped? Everything I own basically ... 4. The Hives- I don't really know which s*** ass "Garage Sound" band this one is but I know I don't like it. I'm convinced that The Hives Strokes Vines and White Stripes are the same band, cause I can't tell the difference... 3.Haven't heard this song Next... 2. First of all the Song's called "You know you're Right" and It's Alright, it is actually heavier than most Nirvana songs. Though Of the Big Four of Grundge I actually rank Nirvana as Last here's the order: 1.Alice in Chains 2. Soundgarden 3.Pearl Jam 4. Nirvana... 1.Didn't hear this one either... Well at least you didn't have any White Stripes on the list this year, they are my most hated band of 2002, so I'm actually surprised you didn't get sucked into the s***tyness that most every music critic in popp music did. I think that my response to your list is actually more popular than your list now! Till next year...
CubKilla
Ok..... that's two "kicked ass" votes for Tenacious D????? WTF????? That song sucks!!!!! It's stupid. It's like a cheap knock-off of The Devil Went Down to Georgia but it fails on all levels. It's not even a good parody-type song. :pukeTenacious D

"This is just a tribute! You gotta believe me! And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion." HAHA! PLus JB and KG are actually really good musicians, they can sing and play really well. Not to mention, Dave Grohl is drumming on that entire album. Dave Grohl= :metal

True, but if you think Linkin Park, or the majority of the bands that you listed are actually"good", you need to listen to something else. Oh, and also, Good Charlotte just look gay. I'm waiting for the "Benji, smoke my pole!" lyric from them. Pop-punk sucks I'm surprised that you don't listen to Coldplay. Good stuff there, doesn't come close to Sigur Ros, or Radiohead though. Also, started listening to FischerSpooner today: one word, different.
