"By taking 13% of his plate appearances that were walks and strikeouts last season and turning them into batted balls, even with just the .164 ISO and .344 BABIP from last season, his wRC+ would go from 97 up to 114 and result in a 3.5 WAR season instead of an average one."

Yea the beauty with 5 tool guys like Yoan is that the path from 2 WAR to 4 and higher is with marginal improvement.  If he can just marginally improve his contact rate he'll be a star.

Well put.

A very good quote that sums up a lot of the discussion on the board with him:

Quote

It just wasn’t working for Moncada, however. He doesn’t need to be good when he falls behind in the count. He just needs to not be terrible and he’ll see a big uptick in his numbers. It’s early, but we’ve seen a change in Moncada’s approach thus far. He’s still swinging at about the same number of pitches when ahead in the count at 53%, but when he’s behind in the count, the number of swings has jumped up to 56%.

That last sentence is really interesting. WHen he fell behind last year, I guess it's easiest to say he should have felt the odds change that it was less likely he'd see a good pitch to drive. Now he's taking that into account and being more aggressive so long as it's in the zone, ideally.

This article is a great read and spot on with Yoan.  Pitchers are going to certainly adjust and throw less pitches for strike one and hopefully Moncada keeps his great eye and lays off them.  If he does and gets ahead more often than not, he could truly become an elite talent.

This is the best part about everything in regards to Moncada... the adjustments that pitchers will make are ones he can easily handle because he has an elite batting eye. So now a pitcher may say he's being more aggressive early, let's not attack him so much early... and Yoan will take those pitches, get ahead in the count, and increase his production that way.

His eye is still a strength and still exists, he's just using it differently now.

If that happens then yes elite is probable. Now imagine him sandwiched between Robert and Jimenez in the order (if they also live up to the hype).. hes going to be even more lethal

and Machado or Harper would have made the lineup championship level

I would have taken either one.  Harper wouldn't have come here, but yeah not going for that extra $50M could come back to really hurt.

Love the article, especially the bit about how pitchers will adjust and not be so aggressive with him, but his batting eye will remain the same.

One very interesting and encouraging tid bit,  Moncada has yet to strike out looking this year.

Considering that was something like 40% of his strikeouts last year, not hard to see how his K rate has dropped significantly.

I feel that there has always been too much hand wringing about his K's because on it's face seems like an easy fix to get to a normal K level.

Bryce Harper was going to anywhere that paid him more than Stanton's deal. He beat it by $4 million.
