SuperSteve
That's according to AP too. They are 16th on the ESPN/USA Today top 25. State is catching them, 15th and 18th respectivly.

SuperSteve
Youre just pissed that theyre better than msu They'd crush NIU. You're big win is over unranked Maryland. Ours is over top ten Iowa. We would be undefeated too had Smoker not gotten hurt in the LA Tech game. That is like ya running back, Turner I believe, missing over half the game. Smoker is all our offense. I wish Iowa would get another shot against MSU. Big 10 is strong this year, you just can't look at the usual suspects. Wisconsin is very good, MSU is, Iowa is, Michigan is alright as is Minnesota and Ohio State is allright. They beat up on eachother and its why no team will go through the big 10 undefeated this year. You forgot Purdue. That makes 7 teams. Big Ten almost always has a good record in bowl games.
danman31
Big Ten almost always has a good record in bowl games. Actually it was the opposite until the last couple years. The Big Ten always disappointed in bowl games and it was a knock against the conference. They finally turned that around the last couple seasons. SuperSteve
This is an up year for the Big Ten, better than the past couple. Last year had two stud teams, Ohio St and Iowa, and a few tough teams. Normally it is one very tough team, Wisconsin a few years ago with Dayne. The Big Ten teams are going to beat each other up. I think Oklahoma, Miami, and VA Tech have shown they are in a league of their own though. State is going through a tough stretch, we probably won't make it through unscaved; Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin all in a row. Michigan is only home game. After that it's just Penn State at home. If we canmake it through, State is Big Ten Champion.

As far as Iowa goes, I still think they beat USC had they not had 6 weeks off before the bowl game. Didin't want to mention Purdue cause they have been really up and down. The Big 10 ended up with 3 teams in the top 10 last season - 3, not 2. And the Big 10 has traditionally been noted (not always accurately but enoughto lend real truth to it) the Big 2 and the Little 8 (or 9). Each season there has always been a few other very quality teams since parity has come into fullest effect. The 3 loss team in the Big 10 last year that ended up ranked 9th nationally was in fact the third place team int he Big 10 but a testament to that program is it takes beating that team to make a claim to anything. For sheer consistency, that one program in the Big 10 is the best. Most posters here were not alive when that one school last had a losing season, or didn't play a bowl game, and the bowl streak would be longer if Big 10 rules had been different in the 60s and up to 1975. To have that many years since a losing season is a remarkable achievement. Michigan continues as the gold standard in the Big 10. As I see it, nothing can be determined yet and no one should be assuming anything with the games ahead. The weakness of MSU has very properly noted in this thread: its offense consists of one player. Smoker is all our offense. OSU is missing Clarett (or perhaps not missing him as the disruptive case may be). Iowa and Minnesota - still to be determined how really good they are. Wisconsin and Purdue, still to be determined. Michigan, still to be determined. Michigan's weakness had been glaringly apparent: its punting team. The only weak teams in the Big 10 this year are Illinois, Indiana, and Northwestern, and Penn State is still a mytery. And having said about Illinois, I do not consider this Saturday's game in Ann Arbor a gimme given the history of the two schools. (And Illinois is the surprise disappointment in the Big 10). Of course the Big 10 season is one of teams beating up each other. A four way tie for 1st would not be unprecedented (even in recent history), not a shock this year. This season more than most needs to be played out before anyone claims any bragging rights. NIU is in an interesting position. As noted elsewhere, they really aren't the 12th best team in the country. The polls are an art, not a science. They deserve a 15 ranking or so because of their wins and their undefeated status but almost all of us would take a bunch of teams ranked below NIU over NIU if the two teams played. The rankings aren't that scientific and shoudn't be used that way. What happens if both NIU and TCU run the table - is that your Sugar Bowl game? hardly, even if every other team in the country has one loss by season end. But what the MAC has done this season and what NIU has done this season, those things are sweet for them and are to be enjoyed thoroughly. I just Western Michigan had gotten in on some of that action. Good luck Huskies!
southsider2k5
Bad news for NIU, their starting all confrence middle linebacker broke his ankle and is out for the rest of the year.
Steaming Willy Harris
Yea that 6 weeks of rest just killed all of Iowas momentum they had going for them, the wait seemed like forever after the final game of the season against minnesota. But you have to admit that USC last year was amazing at least towards the end of the season. NIU is good, but theyll probably end up in an unimportant bowl taking the spot of some major conference who couldnt field enough bowl eligible teams. Texsox
The BCS (major college conferences) will never, I repeat never, allow a non major conference team into one of the bowl games. They will never, I repeat never, share that kind of money with a mid level conference. Sucks for NIU, I'm a big fan. They still got the beer can dorms and the Northern Star?
