JDsDirtySox
Not positive, but I believe Guzman has one year left in his current deal. Two other SS that will be available are Aurillia and Kazuo Matsui. I've heard many places that the Angels will be trying to land Tejada. If that happens it would make Eckstein expendable. He would be an interesting option.

JoshPR
He is going to play Winter Ball. He will play for Wally Backman in Puerto Rico. Yup comming down here to play for Santurce. He played two years in a row. I know a kid that pitches in the Mets farm system and was Rowand's teammate in winterball when Rowand played for Caguas. I asked him about Rowand... and he goes... That SOB Is nuts he's loco, he runs into walls and doesn't care if he hurts himself. really a crazy Mutha F**ker They Called him "Caballo Loco"
SnB
Why not try and get castillo and play him at short......that gives us both a leadoff hitter and a shortstop, or would that be too hard a position change?
Chisoxfn
I agree that we could use a change at SS, but unless we bring in Tejada, I do not see a better option out there than Jose. Free Agent Short Stops Miguel Tejada, Jose Valentin, Rey Sanchez, Rey Ordonez, Mike Bordick, Jose Hernandez, Royce Clayton, Tony Womack Hideki Matsui, Rich Aurilla, and Orlando Cabrerra are also FA. Christian Guzman is slated to be available as well if the Twins stick to what they've hinted.

CASTILLO CAN'T PLAY SHORT!!!! He doesn't have much range at second so no way in Hell can he play short. I heard a stat that kinda got me off the castillo bandwagon and it was his steals were down he stole 21 bases in 40 tries NOT GOOD ChisoxFn, I think you meant Kazuo Matsui.. But I agree, no way can Castillo go to short. I also think there is a definate concern in regards to his stolen base totals going down. That being said I also think early in the season it was pretty much a given that he was gone. Its no defense as he needs to learn to pick and chose at a better rate, but he's always been pretty good on the paths and has amazing speed. Plus a .380 OBP at the leadoff spot is exceptional. Chisoxfn
s***, well Cabrera is number one on my wish list, but if we could get Guzman that would be f***in awesome!!! CWSOX45 The one thing about Guzman is he has had only one good year and he still has a long ways to go. Still he has some definate upside and should come relatively cheap if available. Caberra is still my #1 choice when it comes to reasonable options.
bulokis
Renteria at SS is my dream. I dont want Jose here anymore. We need a change on that position. Cabrera and Guzman are the other ones I am hoping we can have next year. Hopefully Ozzie comes here as the third base coach and slate Castillo to sign with us. Robbie is still good but I would prefer a younger player.
Jim Fainter
Robbie will take a 50% pay cut to stay??? I guess he would. What did he get this year, $8 MM? So he says he will take $4MM to stay?? Who else would take him for anything above the minimum? No one.
YASNY
As great as Roberto Alomar was, back in the day, he is no longer great. At best, he is a nice fill in until we can develop someone. I don't know if Robbie would give us much more production than Aaron Miles. I, also, believe we should replace Jose Valentin as shortstop. I never did like the idea of signing Castillo and playing him at short. Why not get a shortstop to play shortstop? Regarding the rumors, any or all of them could be true. Al Lopez Ghost (old)
I think Guzman might be a restricted FA? In baseball there is no such thing as a restricted free agent. Regarding Robbie Alomar - did it seem to anyone else that he kind of stopped producing in September?
quickman
TQ, welcome back, you've been low profile lately. The Rowand thing doesn't surprise me and I don't doubt it. Why would anyone make something like that up? Who do you want as manager, we never talked about that ... ? Valentin and Alomar, i believe that. I don't think there's much of a market for Valentin ... maybe more so for Alomar but I think his huge paydays are over too. I wish they could upgrade at SS but IMO Alomar is still the best bet at 2B. That's IF this team plans on trying to win. KW ... that doesn't surprise me either, but in my book that's a wait and see. Hey Jim, Hope all is well. Been very depressed about baseball lately so I have been laying low. Can't even listen to sprots radio anymore. I think I hate the Cubs more now than I ever did. Anyway, Saw Wills and Dave at the campout last weekend, I asked how you were doing, other than that I am just waiting to hear some good sox news and Spriong training. Hopefully we can hook up this year in AZ. We never did bring the girls to the game. Jim, my source on this one lives near us, his daughter does cheerleading with mine. When I have a moment I will ping you on email and we can chat.
quickman
IMHO Jose isn't worth half of his price. Get a guy like Cristian Guzman in here. He's actually worth the money. CWSOX45 I agree, unless he's willing to take about 500K then get rid of him. I think for the first time ever in the offseason its pretty unanimous that the Sox need a change at shortstop. Ok, I to think about Jose in the same way. I told this guy I don't want him back. This guy said that the SOX love his attitude and consider him a huge leader on the team, both on and off the field. For the right price he will stay. JR is said to love Valentin and Graffinino, Sandy Alomar.
winninguglyin83
Guzman, who will only be 26 years old in March, has five years of service time. According to the official Twins' media guide, he is signed through the 2004 season. That means he will not be a free agent until the end of the 2004 season -- unless I'm missing something here. Twins might dump him to save salary. According to Baseball America, they have the 10th best SS prospect in the minors, guy named Jason Barlett who played in AA this season. But if they trade Guzman, there is no way they'll send him to the White Sox. So he's not the answer.
Loaiza21
If we hire Ozzie we could attract a Latin surge of players. Cabrera, Castillo, etc. I know they say he's good with Latin players. Plus we could like play 40 games in Puerto Rico or something lol. Anyone notice we're slowly becoming the Expos?

Well I heard he was a free agent, I don't know where I heard it from but I'm almost positive it was printed somewhere. You never know, the Twins could trade Guzman to someone else. Than again the Sox could contact that team and propose a three player deal. I think Guzman would be a perfect fit for the Sox, but I'd like to see if we could get Cabrera first. witesoxfan
cw45, I think you were hearing about how Guzman was looking s***ty, had a bad attitude, played lackadazical, and was not doing much of anything at all, and that because of that, the Twins might give him his outright release. That won't happen....he's the best SS they have available.
