This is pro sports tho, which doesn't work like the "real world" where interpersonal relations are big and keeping a sales guy that has them is important.  This is sports, production is the only thing that matters and in baseball that's what you do when your spot is up in the order and the ball is hit to you in the field.

One needs to only look across town to the Bulls to see how rewarding loyalty (hello Jim Boylen!) works.

There is a direct link between high turnover and consistent failure in professional sports.

Professional sports gets turnover wrong. While you can have a situation like the Bulls where you reward toxic loyalty and that hampers you, but in general it is better to not fire everyone every three years. Continuity is valuable.

He has to produce 6.25 WAR over the next three years.  This is a great deal.  Keeps him working with the Hispanics on the team and also provides needed time for true development for Vaughn if he is still on the team.

Well he's projected by STEAMER for about 5, so I'm sure it will work great.

Yes, but this is only true if Abreu's production falls off a cliff.  If that $14M is not there in 2022, then neither is a DH. So we'd have to pay somebody for that position. It's not like the extra $14M is just added in a vacuum. The whole roster configuration changes.

Sure, the whole roster configuration changes, but now we have $14M less to work with.

Well he's been worth 3.1 over the last two, so not looking good.

What does Steamer project his wRC+ to be in 2022?

I'd hazard an educated guess that it's about 100.  Replacement level DH.  He's under performed his projections two years running.  So you need to be quite optimistic to think he'll get 6+ war.

Ray that you can think the Bulls reward "toxic loyalty" and the Sox don't when KW is still out here being VP and making public comments and obviously is having a major role is just absolutely absurd.

Love the Grandal move bringing in a lefty at bat that gets on base that brings solid defense to help the rotation. Hate this Abreu signing. Ages 33-35 regression is a guaranteed and horrible defense at 1B and will eventually move to full time DH. Hate having one set player at DH. I like being able to rotate your DH when you have Eloy's bad defense and others needing a day off to help rest their bodies through a long season. This 3 year contract was completely Jerry leading the charge.

Take the emotions of this Abreu contract, and the emotions of signing the Grandal contract and meet in the middle. That's where your heads should be at.

Neither are winning or losing us a Championship. These are Tier 2 guys (Jose in his age is a Tier 2 guy). You need a number of these solid, dependable veterans on a winning team.

The key still remains having a few guys breakout into Tier 1 stars. So far it looks like we have a few of those guys and we just have to hope they continue to develop.

If we do those things we should be in a good position in a few years to go out and sprinkle in what you need at the time via minor league depth - whether that be a speed guy, a bullpen arm, a LHB, a Power bat, a contact guy, a TOR starter .... whatever the situation calls for.

Don't worry - this is alright. We are still on the same path as long. Jerry paying Jose in 2022 shouldn't hold us back from spending to put together a championship roster in 2022. If it does, then we never really had a shot to begin. You either believe the money is there to spend or you don't. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I like this move. Shows loyalty to a solid player. Sox arent hurting for cash. He's a great role model for Yoan, Eloy and others. $14 million puts him in Jay Bruce, Josh Reddick, Mark Trumbo and Lorenzo Cain territory,

Great role model? Did he teach them the technique to fitting two cans of dip into your mouth at once?
