What do the Cardinals need a 19 year old pitching prospect for when they are trying to compete now? Also, they are rumored to be dealing major league outfielder(s) to the Rays so bringing back Ozuna would make sense. The market for Ozuna and Castellanos seems to have stalled and they may come cheaper now. Edited January 10, 2020 by Moan4Yoan
SoxAce
I absolutely love Liberatore as a prospect (I was adamant about the Sox drafting him in fact) so I'm very interested to see the details of this one. And if Hahn feels he likes him alot too and needs to trade for him then by all means.
Moan4Yoan
Draft picks involved... ”5:37PM: The trade is shaping up as a multi-player blockbuster, as The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (Twitter links) reports that the Cardinals and Rays are each sending three “pieces” to the other in the deal. “At least two of those pieces are draft picks,” Rosenthal notes, indicating that Competitive Balance Round selections (the only type of draft picks that can be traded) are in play. The Cards are slated to pick in Competitive Balance Round A following the first round of the draft, whereas the Rays draw after the second round in Competitive Balance Round B, so there is roughly a 30-slot gap between the two picks.”
ChiSox59
This trade makes no sense for the Rays unless they really don’t like Liberatore.

PolishPrince34
Really don’t understand this trade for the Rays. They must know something we don’t. I think Liberatore has huge potential. Rays got a very light return. Edited January 10, 2020 by PolishPrince34

Or they really like Arozarena and are buying all in on his changes last year. Either way it feels really odd. A-ball pitching prospects are the riskiest prospects in the game - in a sense of prospect ranking to success. Even still youd have to think hes worth more than that. Quite a gamble with Arozarena being older than the competition at every level. He repeated A, AA, AAA, and is turning 25 next month. This looks like the Cardinals turning a whole lot of nothing into something of high value (Liberatore). TheFutureIsNear
Definitely a puzzling trade...but Jose Martinez definitely seems like the type of guy that will go to the Rays and have a career year for no apparent reason. I fully expect .800+ OPS with 40 bombs...for $2 mil + 2 arb years after. It’s just what the Rays do, I’ve stopped questioning them
SoxAce
I actually like Arozarena. Has very good potential, was a futures game selection, etc. I just don't think he or Martinez justifies getting Liberatore, but then again I am very high on him. Jerksticks
By WAR this actually looks like it’s easier for the Rays side of it to rack up the WAR than the Cards. Arozarena and Martinez Dhing looks like an easy 15 WAR, maybe 20 over the next 4-6 years? Thats a bunch of WAR to hope Liberatore ends up accumulating considering how young and far away he is. Plus the Rays just snagged a way better draft pick and pool. They can draft another Liberatore in 5.5 months.

They haven't advanced past the division series since 2008 when they beat the Sox. Did make the playoffs 4/11 seasons, but haven't won a series. The Rays do it an interesting way and very cheapy, but its not like they've actually done anything with it. Cash is a pretty big factor there. How much cash? If like $20M, that is such a no brainer for the Rockies. Who is beating that? That is like trading Cease, Madrigal and Vaughn for him. Crazy town.
