Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer

 oh boy

The Phillies are the team on there that scare me. They've already spent a ton (on Harper and others), and probably feel a need to spend more to make it all come together. If any team goes to 6 years with Wheeler, they would probably be the one.

It remains to be seen if the Wheeler bidding will play out the way that it did for left-hander Patrick Corbin last winter. Some teams, including the Yankees, expressed a willingness to offer deals of five years, but were reluctant to offer a sixth year -- and Washington separated itself from the pack by dangling a six-year, $140 million contract. There seems to be a group of teams prepared to offer Wheeler five-year deals.

So say you sign Ryu at 18 million/yr instead of wheeler at 22/yr. You have 4 million to go after a lot more pieces.

We could just sign Wheeler and Ryu plus sign two of the best relievers we can find.  Might as well become a pitching powerhouse.

Just do 6/120 for Wheeler with the 6th year being a team option of $18M and a $4M buyout. That 6th year buyout is just chalked up to cost of doing business. By the time 2025 rolls around, $18M will be #4 starter money anyways.

Philly just let Maikel Franco and Cesar Hernandez go...fwiw, Arrieta in last year of his deal.

Also in hot pursuit of DiDi Gregorious.

Its going to really suck if we have to deal with Boras on Ryu...fwiw, Bumgarner is represented by The Legacy Agency. Right now, Boras controls the top #1-2, #4, #6.

Hamels and Wheeler are the other two without Boras Corp representation.

Buster listing the Sox as “also involved” now is concerning to me. It seemed like he was implying it was a done deal earlier. Now they are just listed as “also involved”, shows me that they have probably fallen behind.

A. Are you really surprised

B. The White Sox are still way less desirable than many of these teams

C. Maybe it will be a blessing, they need numerous upgrades that they can use all that money on

How the fuck are the White Sox way less desirable than the Phillies, Rangers, & Reds?  You’re just hating to hate.

And what are these numerous upgrades we need?  Two SPs, a RF, and a bullpen arm?  Guess what, we have the financial flexibility to add Wheeler and fill those other spots.  This would not be a blessing in disguise.

Zero reason to panic over this as leaks happen for a reason.  Most likely, this is Wheeler’s camp wantIng other teams to think The Phillies are ahead of them in hopes of bumping their offers.

i feel like the Nightengale article might have been for that purpose. The reputation of Buster is > Nightengale in the "will run to publish anything he's given" respect, right?

Arguably DH if you don’t believe in Zack Collins...

Yeah I don’t see how the Phillies are more desirable unless it’s the Girardi effect... otherwise the Phillies always seem competitive, then they end up missing the playoffs the majority of the time. Reminds me of the modern day Cowboys actually... buy what you want, but always fall short.
