Team policy...certainly for a beard like that.  Out goes Charlie Blackmon as well.

LaRoche didnt cut his beard and it was long and hideous

Pretty sure this is not a rule.

Crede had long hair for like 2 years.

That’s because Drake LaRoche was honorary manager and in charge of the clubhouse for that one year...and is now deployed in Pattaya, Thailand, breaking up a trafficking ring.

“He’s the best, most naturally talented leader of men I have ever encountered since Robin Ventura.  He could be a four star general, a start-up CEO or the next Mr. Rogers.”     Kenny Williams, 2014

”I love me some Drake.”   Adam Eaton, 2014

”At least they doesn’t needlessly flip over the postgame buffet table due to their non-Raidersesque, pacifist ways.” Chris Sale on the LaRoches

Is Keuchel at say 3/$45-50 terrible?  Unmovable in a year or two?  Franchise crippling in any way?

This. Seems like with the way the market has headed, this wouldn't be a bad move and than see what you can land via trade (at a more controlled cost...albeit at a premium price from a prospect perspective).

My thoughts exactly.  I too would prefer a more front line acquisition, but with the market the way is, locking in Keuchel isn't the worst fall back option.

They aren't going to trade Cease.

Madrigal and Vaughn I could see though.

A 72 win team trading two of its best prospects.  Thus the Sox are what they are.
Who plays 2nd?
As for Keuchel, that would be okay.  I just think there's as good a chance that he really declines as there is that he can deliver a solid 3-/4+ performance for 3 years. But even if he declines, it wouldn't put the org. in a straight jacket or anything.

I mean....in this market, what is a market rate deal for him?  We need a good SP.  Keuchel would be a fine 2nd SP addition, but we don't really need 2 SP on multiyear deals.  We need one a multiyear deal and one on a 1 year deal.

Kuechel for 3/$45M is whatever, but if that's you best SP addition, we're basically punting 2020.

Ryu and Kuechel would firm up the staff substantially.  I know its not Wheeler and Scherzer but in all honesty those contracts border on insane.

There are a ton of FA 2B.  You don't even need to be a 2B to play 2B anymore due to shifting, see Moustakas.

If they were trading Vaughn or Madrigal the return is probably a 4 or 5 WAR player.

We've been out bid on one pitcher (Wheeler) and had the best offer.  Let's not start panicking into trading our future.  The top of our rotation is fine with Gio, Kopech and possibly Cease once everyone is up to speed.   Lopez coupled with Ryu and Keuchel would be a terrific upgrade over last years mess of a staff.  2020 would have improvements in center, rf, catcher, dh, 2nd, starting staff and hopefully the pen.  We compete for the division without anything risky being done.

Why are people so down on Kuechel? Isn’t he a groundball specialist? Which is something we need in our park.

He’s a bit older, his stuff has declined, and with Boras as his agent, he will likely get paid too much based on his past performance rather than what his future holds.

LaRoche did actually. It was much longer than that. He trimmed it just enough. And Kopech already acknowledged the rule on Twitter after he was traded a couple of years ago. Reinsdorf's rule is well known (not as strict as the Yankees but it's definitely a rule).

Well-said  In fact, I think the Sox would be in good shape with a couple of consistent #3/4s.
