Your last line is a bit of an exaggeration. By no means is it the best target. I agree. But let’s see what they do next.

Read chw42’s post...  Mazara hasn’t reached 1 WAR in any single season in his career.  That’s putrid.  You couldn’t do much worse if you tried.

Grandal, Mazara, a couple filler SP and hope to catch lightning in a bottle it seems.

It’s clear as day the Sox had no plan B after missing on Wheeler and now are just trying to piece this shit together.  Can’t believe we endured multiple seasons of failure to be rewarded a with a sub 2 win player as one of our big offseason additions.  Where is all this money and what are they going to spend it on?  And if they’re afraid of Boras pitchers. why did they just trade for one of his clients with limited control?

They must still be living on Mazara’s hype like Hahn is.

This type of crappy "toolsy" athlete who doesn't play baseball all that well has the earmarks of Kenny.   Lightning in a bottle is his MO.  The minute the price tag exceeded what we were willing to spend for a RF we did what the whitesox are known to do.  Garbage picking.

At 24, I really don't care what dumb ass WAR he's posted in the past.

The question is, is there any potential to un-tap going forward?

Also just want to add that this could be selling high on Walker also, as his power (lack of) would have been ugly in Birmingham.

You know what? There's a good chance you're right, and still it's the wrong thing to say.

We heard over and over and over again how little we gave up in the Samardzija trade, the Frazier trade, the Shields trade - you can find that exact comment in every one of those threads. People said it years later about Samardzija. But what happened? 2/3 of the time that statement was right, and then a few times it blew up spectacularly - to the point of literally destroying the franchise for years. Gave up a top 3 MVP candidate and a top 3 prospect in deals that were selling high on players, where we gave up very little.

A large fraction of the time you're going to be right, but because the few successes are so important compared to the many failures, doing moves like this is a strategy that failed us, doomed us, and will fail us continuously in the future. This move could work out extremely well, and it's still a move of a type that will send this franchise right back where it was in 2016 once we do a few more.

Who is the top 3 MVP candidate we gave up?
