That has yet to be seen if the Red Sox truly want to dump salary.  And the Indians weren’t dealing Kluber to the Sox anyways.

Oh I agree on the latter, I was always bummed that some of the only pitching targets for trades I felt were realistic were in our division. CLE isn’t giving us Kluber without a much better package

I’d have rather had Kluber once it was clear a deal is just price

Sure, it would be as if Price’s $32 million salary had the Hahn/KW Special added to wipe out his 2021-22 salaries for only $1 million if he didn’t reach a minimum of 160 innings in 2020...

No way they risk/ed trading him to the Twins or White Sox.   Call me totally non-shocked if it will come out next week, though, that they supposedly had a better offer on the table, such as Collins and Adolfo, etc.

Man, I get one year of Kluber not that valuable and Cleveland has depth, but this is nothing.

Kluber has two team options remaining for 2020 and 2021.

2020: $13.5M club option ($1M buyout)

2021: $14M club option ($1M buyout)

Agreed, but I'm simply stating this pretty pretty much puts the axe in any Madrigal/Vaughn talks for Price talks.

Price has negative trade value, if anything the red Sox need to add a prospect or young player (benintendi was suggested by some) and will only get a marginal prospect (40 fv or so) back.

I saw somewhere that Kluber gets a raise or something because he was traded, someone tweeted that CLE would be throwing in case to offset that. Kicking myself because I can't find it on my timeline now.

  • salaries, options may increase up to $4M each based on finish in 2015-19 Cy Young votes (top 5 finish in 2018 Cy Young vote increased 2019 salary to $17M, 2020 option to $17.5M, 2021 option to $18M)
  • assignment bonus: $1M if traded
  • if traded in 2015-19, new club must exercise or decline both 2020 and 2021 options within 3 days after end of 2019 World Series
  • if traded in 2020, 2021 option converts to a vesting option guaranteed if Kluber has 160 innings pitched in 2020 and is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2020 season

Kluber gets an additional $1 million since he was traded.  Technically, Kluber was traded in 2019 so I’m not sure the fourth bullet point applies.  But I didn’t realize his 2020 and 2021 team option salaries increased, as you can see in the first bullet point.

I know it would have cost us way more to get Kluber since we're within the division, but what do you guys think it would have taken had we absorbed the whole contract?

There's no WHOLE CONTRACT to absorb.  If he pitches less than 160 innings this year, their (the Rangers) overall commitment is still under $20 million.  He also can't be on the disabled list at the end of the season.

It's a win-win either way for the Rangers, because the 2019 version doesn't get the 2021-22 options to kick in, the and the pre-2018 version is worth $25-35 million on the free agent market these days and you're happy to keep him.
