Harold's Leg Lift
The Rangers may have found something here by trading with a couple teams that may be overvaluing velocity. First they traded 2 time TJ guy Peter Fairbanks and his 100+mph fastball to the Rays for Nick Solak and now they traded Emmanuel Clase a 22 yr old with 23 career innings and a 100+ cutter to the Indians for a top of the rotation starter. They got a two very solid players for two highly volatile arms. It's a good strategy. I'd sell high on these guys all day long.
caulfield12
Clase was 30th ranked for the Rangers. At best, their equivalent of Victor Diaz. This was all about not believing in Kluber any longer at those numbers for a small market team, and payroll flexibility for one more year if they held onto Lindor. Clase is a much better option/prospect than Victor Diaz. Diaz only threw really hard. Clase has unreal movement on his pitches. There's a lot to like from him. Is it enough to make him the centerpiece for Kluber? Most likely no.
Harold's Leg Lift
Yes he's a good relief prospect but a highly volatile relief prospect. I read the Indians asked the Angels for Brandon Marsh. If they value those two players equally they are absolutely overvaluing velocity. It's a smart move by Daniels to move those types of guys for more solid players. caulfield12
The likeliest scenario is that the Indians can't afford to invest $20-30 million into free agents for the back end of their bullpen. They have to come up with as many cheaper internal options as possible. This is yet another reason why the Burdi pick was so questionable, unless you have an absolutely elite arm who projects to be a closer, there's just too much risk involved in drafting one that high (as opposed to spreading the money around in Latin America and signing bounce-back veterans like Treinen and Stammen). Picking Poreda and Royce Ring so high should have taught them the risks. You should never draft for short-term need unless it's the final player to put you over the top. This wasn't the case with the 2016 White Sox, in even the most optimistic appraisal. For the Indians, the risk is worth the reward because they can't give Daniel Hudson or Betances $10-20 million in guaranteed money.
