Dick Allen
Considering the regular LF and RF won’t be considered gold glove candidates it probably is a good idea to have a good glove on the bench.

I know Maybin had great hitting stats last year but it doesn't seem sustainable to me. He should easily be better with the bat than Engel, though. And while he's not a great defender, he has good range and is at least better than Mazara/Eloy

The second tweet makes me think that Stone gets pissed if people question his insider knowledge of Sox moves. Stone's always been rough around the edges in fan interactions IMO. There are numerous stories throughout the years about him being a prick to people at Soxfest because he won't write his Cy Young inscription on there or flat out refusing to sign certain items (and I think he reacts this way because he truly believes every adult getting memorabilia of his is out to make a buck - which is absolutely not always the case). Guy can totally do what he wants, don't get me wrong, but he does seem to have a very short fuse and get annoyed quite easily. Some of his tweets could totally be taken as rude, but I've seen him have plenty of positive interactions as well. I think he's just a 72 year old with very strong convictions and doesn't want to bother with anyone that attempts to present an argument that conflicts with his beliefs. My dad is 71 and he's totally the same way at this point in his life, hahaha.

This desire for a bench full of specialists is crazy to me when we have a starting OF full of guys that get injured quite frequently. Mazara has averaged 122 games over the past two seasons. Eloy only played in 122 games last year and has battled injuries in both minor league seasons with us as well. Robert was mostly healthy last year, but battled multiple injuries before that. I do NOT want to rely on Adam Engel or Leury Garcia as an everyday starter if / when one of these guys goes down for a month. Let’s add someone that is a bit more well rounded and won’t kill you if exposed to everyday at-bats. Maybin would a huge upgrade over Engel in that sense and can still be used as defensive replacement in both corners. Until one of the minor league OFs proves to be a depth option (hopefully Basabe does at some point next year), we need a better 4th OF than Adam Engel. In this case the grass is greener because Engel sucks and Maybin is a passable bench outfielder and if Engel played for another team we wouldn't know about him because he never would have come up. So there would be no virtues to extol 2 1

Engel is all glove and no bat and Leury is mediocre at both and makes boneheaded defensive plays. No fans of other teams are jealous for an Engel on their bench. James McCann as a backup catcher? Sure, but the rest of our bench is mostly mediocre to bad. Edited January 23, 2020 by Moan4Yoan
