We're still trending down or basically flat on a 7-day average, but we've ticked up very slightly on a 3-day average.

No incoming quarantine restrictions.

You're going to have to limit some of that travel otherwise i guarantee we're going to ship it right back to you.

We're not even bothering to meet our crucial requirements to move to phase 4 (Tracing: Begin contact tracing and monitoring within 24 hours of diagnosis for more than 90% of cases in region) so I'm doubtful we'll do anything to stop the second wave until it's too late.

Essentially same day as yesterday. Cases 857 on 30,425 tests, 2.8% positive rate.

Could be a 2-day blip, but my worry:

- Last week tests were pretty low at only 18-21k, they have surged to 30k this week. Is this a sign of additional ease and capacity? Or are more people concerned they have covid?

These tests rose considerably, but didn't suppress the positive rate, the rate seems to be trending up. Not by a lot, and last week had the incredible day of 29k tests and under 500 cases, but it is more like 2.7% with todays after being 2.6 the previous 7 day avg. More testing you'd hope to see lower  %positive.

Illinois has seen these raw number blips before, and they often ended up being good news. A surge in testing at once catching more cases and then it seemingly settling down for a while. I hope that's the case with this.

Yeah, this is what worries me as an Illinois Resident. A lot of people travel in and out of Chicago, even when air traffic is severely depressed. And some nearby states with shared Metro areas (Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana) have shown a poor record of handling things. Some bleed-in is inevitable - I just hope it isn't terribly bad.

Again, while not perfect, if most of the country literally just wore masks, avoided indoor congregations with close quarters, and kept some social distance, we could be in a MUCH better place. A combination of ignorance and selfishness is what is killing people at this point more than anything else.

And

1. Mitch McConnell, Dick Cheney, Rick Scott and a host of other very visible R’s have come out and said “WEAR A MASK” yet The White House will refuse to say those words. Pence was asked the question today and they simply will not utter the words “We advise all to wear a mask.”

2. I don’t want to hear that The White House isn’t responsible for any of this, and it’s up to the states. This isn’t a “both sides” of the aisle argument here. Both D’s and R’s are coming out urging the public to wear a mask, but The White House won’t do it.

1. Pence essentially said everyone needs to take precautions but when a reporter pushed him on wearing a mask, he deflected it and gave some bullshit answer like "we have freedom of speech to do other things in this country" which makes zero sense.

2. It's a circus.

Judging by how many Illinois plates I see every weekend at our tourist destinations in NWI, I would be scared too.  The outlet mall is open and packed.  The Casino is back open and filling up, and our beach is packed as are all of the summer houses owned by people from the Chicago metro.  I KNOW there are a lot of people who aren't using protection while out here too.

Its funny.  If you have AIDS and knowingly don't take protective measures, you can be charged with a felony.  But when it comes to COVID, we talk about freedoms.  They are both viruses that can cause a deadly disease.  What is the difference here?

And look, I was one of the people critical of Cuomo but especially deblasio.

He shouldn't have ordered LTC take positive patients discharged from hospitals. Others had similar info and knew better.

However, nobody was in the same situation as NYC was in, and NYC was in that situation because it is a global travel hub that was likely to contract it - but also we did not have any tests to know whether it was spreading beyond known wuhan travelers.

And then we know it's spreading, and there is immediately a capacity issue. The Federal government dragged its feet, it delays providing hospital ships, then they arrive and basically nobody is able to use them.

The capacity issue was real and pressing and it was understandable at the time to take a risk because it was likely you were facing people dying in the streets. But it was shortsighted.

IT was a bad decision, but it was one that was made because the fed government is absent. Some governors are making bad decisions. They are operating in a space where they are more able to because the fed communications are a shitshow and they are saying "you deal with it". Well when people see the feds saying "eh not a big deal" it's a lot harder for the governors to go against that sentiment.

And way behind the countries on top of the board. Belguim has twice as many per million as we do. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1104709/coronavirus-deaths-worldwide-per-million-inhabitants/ This also isn't including countries like China, Russia, etc. who are sure to be cooking their books.

Notice that all of the countries towards the top are UK, France, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, etc. You know... some of the nations with the most traffic, industry, etc. Considering all of the traffic that comes in and out of this country. We're doing pretty damn good.

And that's not how it works. We're experience a bit of a spike now but that's what it is... a spike. We will spike will some others slow. Then, we will slow while others spike.

At the end of the day; this damn thing got here in December. From there, it was on its own.

Perhaps it's not safe for all of us to be rushing back to work.

There is/was going to be a spike WHENEVER we go back. I don't think people understand the point of the shutdown. It was never to eradicate the virus. We will ALL be exposed eventually. It's to space out the spikes so we have the ability to care for everyone and hospitals/doctors don't get over run. It's working.

People honestly are under the impression that quarantining/shutting down was supposed to permanently flatten and get rid of this. It was never intended to do that. We're trying to space out the waves until we get a vaccine.

Taking this convo here rather than the baseball thread, but basically this whole post is wrong.

We're not "way beyond" the 6 countries that are ahead of us in deaths per capita, aside from perhaps Belgium. We're also catching up on them all at a decent pace. Belgium had 4 deaths yesterday, 5 today. France, Spain, Italy and Sweden are also down below 50/day.

We're not doing pretty good. We're doing awful and getting worse while the EU as a whole and even the UK are actually doing much, much better than they were a few months ago. We'll spike, and as we continue to implement ineffective half-measures at best in too many places and reopen too early, we'll continue to grow. Look at this graphic:

Note that it is only 3 days old, and we've already broken 42k new cases a day today.

We see from the experience of many other countries around the globe that there didn't need to be the huge upswing we're seeing here. It's here because of horribly insufficient public policy and a rush to "open back up" well before we had this under control to the point that we could do so safely and contain any future outbreaks. We're at more than 120,000 dead Americans and growing by hundreds every day, and we are seeing hospitals in the hotspots getting overwhelmed now. This isn't working. We could have done better.

If you can't tell the difference between sneezing and fucking, you're doing one of them really wrong, or really right.

If you can't tell the difference between the final results you are being intentionally obtuse.

If you couldn't tell that was a joke, I apologize.  I tried to make it evident alluding to the fact that sneezing could be similar to screwing.  But I get that on message boards things don't always translate.
